___________________ BRANCH 118 AT THE XXX UNWLA CONVENTION by Martha Noukas, President of Branch 118 in Houston, TX L-R: Juliana Noukas, Sarah Uschak, Slava Detsyk, Olga Dub, Marianna Zajac, Martha Noukas, Mary Uschak Sheehey, and Hannah Uschak-Cruz. I was very much elated when at our Feb- ruary 1, 2014, branch meeting several hands flew into the air when I asked, “How many members would like to attend the XXX UNWLA Conven- tion?” In years past, there has not been such great enthusiasm. Due to various circumstances, two members seldom went, and we were often content with sending one attendee, if that. This year, not only did we have several in- dividuals say that they wanted to go, but that they could actually go! Branch 118 Vice President Olga Dub had attended the last convention and re- turned saying that she was going again in 2014, even if she had to pay for all the expenses herself! She held to her promise. Branch 118 was delight- ed to send Slava Detsyk, a newly enrolled mem- ber, but a longtime supporter of Branch 118. If you attended the Convention this year, you might have met Slava in the gift shop, where she was also selling her beautiful gerdany . Fortunately, this year, there were no work schedule conflicts, which allowed me the oppor- tunity to attend the UNWLA Convention. I was very happy to accompany three of our youngest members: Hannah Uschak, Sarah Uschak, and Juliana Noukas. (Yes, these ladies are related to me. The Uschak girls are my nieces, and Juliana is my daughter!) So now you see why I was more than ecstatic when these young women said that they wanted to go to the UNWLA convention. And we made it happen! In total, there were six Branch 118 mem- bers in attendance, and we also invited Mary Uschak Sheehey to join us. (Mary is the older sis- ter of Hannah and Sarah. Mary now lives in New Jersey and she drove up to Tarrytown to join our group.) It goes without saying that we all had a wonderful time at the convention. As in years past, I remain in awe and am so proud to be a part of this wonderful organization of hard-working Ukrainian women. Upon returning to Houston, I was interest- ed in learning how our youngest members felt
