The Macomb County Commissioners distribute awards every year during their Board’s regular meeting to ded i- cated individuals who have volunteered their time benefiting the county and its residents. The fo l- lowing statement appeared on their program booklet: “The impact of volunteers is great, and the value of their contributions toward the be t- terment of Macomb County is priceless...” To be considered for the award, individuals must meet two requirements: they must have donated at least 150 hours of service to the community and either must reside in Macomb County or their volunteerism must have benefited the county and its residents. The nearly seventy honorees in this year’s program were nominated by various churches, schools, organizations, and clubs. Their work varied from humanitarian and community- oriented deeds to community-relat ed art, music, sports, or other contributions. Vera Andrushkiw, who logged 200 hours of service, was nominated by UNWLA Branch 96 of the Detroit Regional Cou n- cil, and Ann Szajen ko , who volunteered over 150 hours, was nominated by Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Schools. Ann Szajenko is also a member of UNWLA Branch 132. The evening started with each honoree b e- ing greeted individually and asked to pose for an official photograph. The honorees and their guests then relocated to another room for r e- freshments. Afterwards, everyone moved to their last destination, a large semi-circular room where the Board of Commissioners conducts meetings. Presentation of awards was on the m eeting’s agenda. As each honoree’s name was called, the
