“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2014 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 5 Lt. Nadiya Savchenko we got rid of Yanukovich. I hope that you will soon be rid of Putin.” On August 27, 2014, her trial was suspended for two months as Lt. Nadiya Savchenko was sen- tenced to undergo a one-month ‘forensic psychiatric evaluation’ at the notorious Serbsky State Scien- tific Center in Moscow, an institu- tion known for its human rights abuses. She has refused to partici- pate in these examinations stating that she has been brought to Russia by force. Throughout her ordeal, her human rights have continually been violated, and her legal council has not always been given access to her. Her law- yer, Mark Feygin, has requested Amnesty Inter- national to label her ‘Prisoner of Conscience.’ Ac- cording to Mr. Feygin, she will soon be given the status of “political prisoner” by Russian human rights organizations. The UNWLA has been supporting Nadiya from the first weeks of her capture. July 11, 2014 Our media campaign on behalf of Lt. Nadiya Savchenko began with an email action item encouraging UNWLA membership to contact the Russian Embassy and local representatives and demand Lt. Savchenko’s immediate release. July 15, 2014 The UNWLA sent a letter to Rus- sia's Permanent Representative to the United Na- tions, Vitaly Churkin, demanding the immediate release of Lt. Nadiya Savchenko. July 15, 2014 The UNWLA sent a letter to the Russian Ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislak, demanding the immediate release of Lt. Nadiya Savchenko. August 7, 2014 The UNWLA sent a letter to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton request- ing her support for the release of Lt. Nadiya Savchenko in the United States and in the inter- national community. September 5, 2014 The UNWLA sent a letter to Ms. Melanne Verveer, most recently the Ambas- sador-at-Large of the Office of Glob- al Women’s Issues in the State De- partment, asking for her help in dis- seminating information about Lt. Savchenko’s alarming situation and in securing her release. September 8, 2014 The UNWLA sent an email to UN High Commis- sioner of Human Rights, Mr. Zeid Raad Zeid al-Hussein, with a request to look into Lt. Nadiya Savchenko’s case and help secure her release. October 7, 2014 The UNWLA sent a synopsis of the original letter to Secretary Hillary Clinton regarding Lt. Nadiya Savchenko via email due to no response from Secretary Clinton to our orig- inal correspondence. October 7, 2014 The UNWLA sent a letter to Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, co-chair of Ukrainian Congressional Caucus and dedicated advocate of women, requesting her help within the United States’ government and the interna- tional community in disseminating information and in demanding freedom for Lt. Nadiya Savchenko. October 8, 2014 The UNWLA sent a personal letter to Lt. Nadiya Savchenko for moral support through the Embassy of Ukraine to the United States of America. It will be hand delivered to Lt. Nadiya Savchenko by her lawyer via the Ukraini- an Embassy in Moscow. This letter is printed in this issue of Our Life in both Ukrainian and Eng- lish. Lt. Nadiya Savchenko is not forgotten . Please continue to reach out to your elected officials requesting their support for Lt. Savchen- ko. If you have an idea on how to get the word out for Lt. Savchenko’s release and want to spear- head it, feel free to contact me or the UNWLA. Together our voices will be heard, and we will make a difference!
