“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2014 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 25 poetry recitations were given in Ukrainian by Halyna Stupen—“The Uplifting of Bohdan Volo- shyn ”—and Kateryna Rodriguez, who presented a moving original poem entitled “To God.” As we all know, Ukrainians love the bandura and poetry! After the musical program, two presenta- tions were left on the agenda of the day’s festivi- ties. Oksana Woroch gave a short presentation about the upcoming UNWLA excursion on Octo- ber 5th to the Ukrainian Museum in New York City to view the Bicentennial Exhibition, Taras Shevchenko: Poet, Artist, Icon . This outing was to be a rare opportunity to view the art and poetry of this renowned Ukrainian Poet Laureate who is the spirit, soul, and symbol of Ukrainian Independ- ence. Last but not least, Nataliya Turchyn, a rep- resentative of the CBI Credential Organic Skin Care Company, gave valuable tips on skin care techniques, products, and make-up applications, to everyone’s delight. At the conclusion of the event, Soyuzian- ky were given a farewell with a gift bag filled with “goodies” to take home. Some opted to stay and sing favorite songs. IHOR MAGUN’S SPEECH AT THE CELEBRATION OF DEN’ SOYUZIANKY AND THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR LIFE IN NEW YORK On October 5, 2014, the Board of the New York Regional Council together with UNWLA Branch 125 in New York City hosted a special celebration of Den’ Soyuzianky and the 70th anniversary of Our Life at the Ukrainian National Home. During this event, Dr. Ihor Magun, the longtime author of a monthly medical column in Our Life , received a certificate of appreciation for his dedication to the UNWLA and its magazine. Dr. Magun’s speech, both humorous and touching, offers some wonderful insight into the staying power and attraction of the UNWLA as a Ukrainian diaspora organization. Dr. Ihor Magun receives the certificate of appreciation from Our Life editor-in-chief, Lidia Slysh. Good afternoon! Two lady friends meet in the street. One of them says to the other, “Tomorrow is my birth- day.” “How wonderful,” the other one replies. “But I went to my doctor and he imposed so many restrictions on me! I am not allowed to eat many sweets, or drink much alcohol, and I have to go to bed early... What should I do?” “That’s easy,” her friend replies. “Make sure you do not invite your doctor to your birthday party tomorrow, and that will solve your problem!” (Laughter) I thank you for inviting me today and many thanks for the certificate of appreciation—I had no idea that I would be receiving it today. It makes me very happy to see all of you looking so young. It must mean that you have read my recent article in Our Life on how to look young and have used the tips given there. (Laughter) Thank you for taking my advice! The last time when I was with you at such an event was back in 2005 at the Soyuzivka , and back then I was also honored to receive a certifi- cate of recognition from the then President of the UNWLA, Iryna Kurowyckyj. It was a memorable day for me, just like today. I find it hard to believe that I have been contributing medical articles to Our Life for nineteen years. (Applause) It’s sur- prising, for I am only twenty-nine right now, so I must have begun when I was ten. (Laughter) This is a joke, of course. I would like to thank all the editors of the magazine with whom I have had the opportunity to work: I began contributing when Iryna Chaban was the editor, and then continued with Tamara Stadnychenko, and then with Olesia Wallo as well as Lidia Slysh. I would like to thank them all for cooperation as it is not easy to produce such a magazine, and it is simply wonderful that you
