Kateryna Rodriguez recites her original poem, “To God.” Becoming an annual tradition in the fall , Den’ Soyuzianky brings together members of the Philadelphia Regional Council (UNWLA) to enjoy each other’s company, recognize achievements, and experience a pleasant afternoon of music and poetry. Members from Branches 10, 43, 67, 88, 90, 91, and 128 of the Philadelphia Regional Council attended in numbers in 2014 and made this affair one to remember for some time. The event took place at the Ukrainian Ed- ucational and Cultural Center in Jenkintown, PA, on Sunday, September 14, and commenced with Fr. Volodymyr Kostyuk, pastor of St. Michael’s the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church, cele- brating a Moleben service. Philadelphia Regional Council President Halyna Henhalo warmly wel- comed all the Soyuzianky and honored guests, namely UNWLA President Marianna Zajac and Sophia Hewryk, third Vice President of the UN- WLA, who traveled far for this occasion. Presenting awards for outstanding service to the UNWLA, Ms. Zajac recognized Lidia Buk, a longtime member of Branch 67, and the late Branch 43 member Anna Maksymowych with Honorary Membership Awards for their dedica- tion and commitment throughout the years. Ms. Henhalo also gave a tender tribute to the late Mrs. Maksymowych, who passed away suddenly this spring and will be sorely missed by all who knew her for her kindness and talents. Citations for their achievements and contributions to the UN- WLA were also bestowed upon representatives of branches 43, 90, 59, 88, 128, and 10. Giving the keynote address, Ms. Zajac re- flected on the highlights of the past year: the XXX UNWLA Convention, Our Life’s 70th anniversary, and the 200th jubilee of the birth of the renowned Taras Shevchenko. She expressed her pride in the past and present accomplishments of the UN- WLA. For example, she said that just last week the UNWLA sent a container of medical supplies to Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, to help those brave Ukrainians battling in the Donbas. She also laud- ed the other projects that the UNWLA does to aid both children and invalids. Ms. Zajac concluded by encouraging women of Ukrainian descent to unite and join the UNWLA. In the spirit of levity, Mistress of Ceremo- nies and Branch 128 member Hanusia Stolyar- chuk introduced the performers. Beautifully at- tired in Ukrainian embroidered blouses, Halyna Bodnar and Yuliya Stupen played melodiously on the bandura and sang four Ukrainian ballads, and L-R: Yuliya Stupen and Halyna Bodnar, bandurists.
