16 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2014 On Sunday, October 5th, the New York Regional Council held its annual Den’ Soyuzianky at the Ukrainian National Home in New York City. This year’s event was unique in that it also celebrated Our Life ’s 70th anniversary. In a very festive environment, the Regional Council’s Pres- ident, Halyna Romanyshyn, shared the history of the branches in this Council with the audience. In my presentation, I had the opportunity to thank the New York City branches (30, 83, 113, and 125) for their hard work and dedication towards our group effort in making the XXX Convention a success. Dr. Ihor Magun, a monthly column con- tributor to Our Life for over 19 years, was pre- sented with a certificate of appreciation from the National Board by the Our Life editor-in-chief, Lidia Slysh. Ms. Slysh had a very interesting presentation on the history and contributions of the magazine to both the lives of its subscribers and the diaspora in general. Branch 125 lead this event by arranging the logistics and the enter- tainment. Den’ Soyuzianky and 70th anniversary of Our Life in New York City. (L-r): Oreslava Khomyk, Xenia Rakowska, Mariana Zajac, Olha Maryn, Halyna Romanyshyn, and Roksolana Misilo. Thank you for making time in your busy schedules for this very important day when you, as members of the New York Regional Council, join hands in acknowledgement of the contribu- tion of each Soyuzianka in your region. During the Columbus Day weekend, Octo- ber 11-13, Vice President Ulana Zinych and I visited the Ohio Regional Council. President Daria Fedo- riw and Vice President Natalia Simms organized a lovely group dinner for the branch officers (Branches 8, 12, and 130) on Saturday evening and arranged for a Regional Council meeting on Sun- day. I gladly shared impressions from the Conven- tion—for those who were not able to attend—and summarized National Board activities and initia- tives since the Convention, especially the newly formed “War Victims Fund,” to the members and guests in attendance. This Regional Council boasts a successful svitlychka (36 children) run by Branch 130; the pride of all UNWLA members, the statue of Lesya Ukrainka erected and since maintained by Branch 8; and the backbone of the Regional Coun- cil and UNWLA events in the Parma/Cleveland area, Branch 12. Lively discussions ensued regard- ing plans for the future and ways to strengthen communications between the National Board and all Regional Councils. Visiting the Ohio Regional Council. (L-r): Natalka Simms, Marianna Zajac, Ulana Zinych, and Daria Fedoriw. This past month was filled with many ac- tivities and opportunities to meet with members one-to-one. Communication, sharing ideas and individual stories, is what makes our work more personal and, if it is personal, I believe that we feel the need and desire to give more of ourselves and derive more satisfaction in the end. At this time of Thanksgiving let us pause to count our blessings—the freedom of this great country in which we live and the family and friendships which we share. My best wishes to you and your families for a Happy Thanksgiving!
