16 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2014 During this blessed Christmas season, let us fill our lives with love, compassion, tole r- ance, peace, and happiness. And may this Christmas season bring your closer to all those whom you treasure in your heart! During this Christmas season of giving, a time when we are all blessed with the warmth of our homes and families — while so many are suffering in Ukraine — we thank you in advance for your support of the W ar Victims Fund! Remembering and Supporting One of the Diaspora’s Long -Standing and Most Respected Organizations... t he UNWLA Marta Holian Pflanczer and her husband, Dr. Steven Pflanczer, recently bequeathed an extrem e- ly generous amount for the projects of the UNWLA’s Social Welfare programs. On behalf of all the future recipients of their benevolence, I would like for us to remember this kind couple in our prayers. We were not acquainted with Mrs. Pflanczer as she was not a member of the UNWLA, nor can we find too much information about her life. She was born in Ukraine; Dr. Pflanczer, in Hungary. Mrs. Pflanczer passed away in January, 2005, while Dr. Pflanczer died suddenly in February of 2014. Upon the passing of Dr. Pflanczer, the couple ’ s estate was equally divided between the UNWLA and the Amer i- can Hungarian Foundation. Marta was born in 1929 in L’viv and attended schools in Innsbruck, Strasbourg, and Paris. It was in Paris that she met her future husband in 1956 after he escaped the Soviet occupation of Hungary. The couple moved to the United States and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Marta received a Bachelor of Arts and then a Master of Arts in French from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Pflanczer obtained seve r- al degrees in Europe and in the United States and spent his entire career in public education: he was a professor at the University of Wisconsin and later, when they relocated to New York State, at the State University of New York at Albany. The couple was fluent in six languages. Mrs. Pflanczer was an avid reader, music lover, and ga r- dener. Dr. Pflanczer especially enjoyed gardening with his wife until her passing in 2005. He was the a u- thor of many academic articles and books on social policy. The couple is buried in Menands, Albany Co unty, New York. May Dr. and Mrs. Pflanczer rest in peace! Vichnaya Pamyat! * * * It is clear that sometime, somehow, the charitable work of the UNWLA touched the lives of this highly educated, yet modest, couple. The UNWLA’s 90 -year long history of giving to the community, of aid to Ukraine and Ukrainians wherever they may be found is a fact which we, as UNWLA members, perhaps do not publicize enough — but clearly our actions speak just as loud as any ad or public relations campaign can do. The faith and trust which the Pflanczers put into the UNWLA are a confirmation of this fact. As you are all aware from the recent articles in the Ukrainian press, our website, and the info r- mation found in Our Life , we continue on this road of service. Although this is a difficult topic to broach, may we humbly suggest that you remember the UNWLA in your or your loved ones’ last wills and test a- ments, just as the honorable Pflanczers did . Marianna Zajac, UNWLA President
