THE FORTY - SEVENTH CIUS SHEVCHENKO LECTURE FOCUSES ON WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN UKRAINE According to the news release from the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, Kateryna Levchenko, President of the International Wo m- en’s Rights Center “La Strada – Ukraine,” deli v- ered the Institute’s annual Shevchenko lecture on March 21st at the University of Alberta. The di s- tinguished guest lecturer, who is known for her advocacy of women’s rights and her involvement in combating traffic king in women a nd chi ldren, addressed the topic of social indifference to wo m- en’s rights violations in Ukraine. The lecture covered Ukraine’s status in the area of gender equality as compared to other countries; evidence of discrimination against women in politics and the wor ld of advertising; political persecution of Yulia Tymoshenko as well as the role which this widely publicized case has played in raising awareness about women’s repr e- sentation in government; and an overview of La Strada - Ukraine projects aimed at protecting women’s rights. Dr. Levchenko described various instan c- es of women’s rights violations, many of which occur on a daily basis in Ukraine. For example, hiring practices in Ukraine include specifying the desired sex of a future employee in job ads and discri minating against women with younger chi l- dren and those over forty - five years of age. Wo m- en also routinely receive lower pay than men for doing the same type of work. In the national parliament, women dep u- ties are greatly outnumbered by men, and some of th e highest - ranking Ukrainian politicians have been known to make demeaning remarks about Dr. Kateryna Levchenko gives the annual CIUS Shev - chenko lecture on March 21, 2013, at the University of Alberta. Photo by CIUS women’s involvement in the political sphere. Dr. Levchenko cited a few of these, including Victor Yanukovych’s assertion that a woman’s “place” is in the kitchen and Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov ’s comment, made in 2011 in response to questions about choosing gov ernment staff me m- bers. “With all respect to women, I would like to mention that carrying out refo rms is none of women’s business, ” stated Mr. Azarov quite un a- bashedly. Against the background of such disrespect for women and blatant disregard for their rig hts, La Strada and other non - governmental organiz a- tions pursue various avenues to combat gender discrimination and to provide assistance to wo m- en in need. Dr. Levchenko spoke about the esta b- lishment of an Expert Council that accepts a p- peals about violation s of women’s rights and works with the Ministry of Social Policy on cases of discrimination. She also described La Strada’s aid projects in the area of violence against wo m- en, as well as the organization’s many programs to promote and support gender educat ion in Ukraine. For more details on the lecture, see the CIUS new s release from 4/17/2013 on the Institute’s website.
