“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 201 3 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 19 cation and Information at The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vas sar College in Poughkee p- sie, New York. Andrij Kurochka and Marianna Zajac at Vassar College. April 21st – New York Regional Council’s annual meeting held at UNWLA Headquarters. UNWLA V ice P resident of Cultural Affairs, Sophia Hewryk, represented t he National Board while Member at Large Vera Kushnir discussed the XXX Conve n- tion preparation details. Our Life Editor - in - Chief attended to offer current information, answer questions and listen to s uggestions regarding the UNWLA’s 70 - year old magazine. While we encourage the Regional Cou n- cils and branches to submit detailed articles about their own events, it is my pleasure to give you a preview of those we were privy to attend. In the recent weeks, UNWLA office a d- ministrator prepared a comprehensive a nd cu r- rent list of donors to the UNWLA Women’s Stu d- ies Lectureship at UCU (all donations were prev i- ously acknowledged in Our Life ). This acknow l- edgment list will have appeared in the Ukrainian press by the time this issue is received by our readers. We aga in take this opportunity to thank all of our supporters! Dr. Halyna Teslyuk, Coordinator of the UNWLA Lectureship at UCU, is currently pla n- ning the next two years of the program and should have her proposal for this timeframe ready by the end of the month . As reported before, the Lectureship will include an accredited course, seminars open to the public, and an annual series of lectures by a visiting professor (as well as ong o- ing research). The seminar portion of the Lectureship for this spring is extreme ly interesting. The first seminar, which took place on April 10th, was ent i- tled Mary Magdalen: Who is this Woman? A Visual Case Study for the Interplay between Word and Image . A s announced to the UCU st u- dent body, “ [a]mong the women mention ed in scripture, Mary Magdalen is a figure that has i n- spired artists throughout history. She is refe r- enced briefly in scripture, yet her image, prolific in visual art, has also served to conflate, confuse, and misconstrue the person. This presentation examines t he case of Mary Magdalen, a woman who m we know, or think we know. The focus will be on the way works of art shape our understan d- ing of this person and how returning to scripture, the figure of Magdalen might be rendered anew.” The presenter was Dr. Rebbeca Berru Davis who received her Ph.D. in Art and Religion in 2012 from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. Her research is centered on women, in particular on the creative work by Latin American and U.S. Latina women, which may be seen in the home, the church and the community. The exa m- ination of the wome n’s role in scripture is an i n- novative topic which will no doubt be quite thought - provoking to all attending. Three add i- tional seminars are scheduled for this academic year and we will bri ng you updates on a regular basis. As I end this month’s update, I would like to compliment and thank the Board of the R e- gional Council of New Jersey on the planning and execution of its annual “Den’ Soyuzianky.” Its Board members refreshed everyone on th e mi s- sion and programs of the UNWLA (Ivanka Oles - nycky on the “Assistance and Aid to the Elderly” and N ew J ersey ’s assigned nursing home in Tyvriv, Ukraine; Roxolana Misilo on the necessity of supporting The Ukrainian Museum; Honorary President Anna Krawcz uk on the importance of the Scholarship Program) while incorporating their neighboring communities’ children’s dance groups and their families into the program. A c- cording to several of the attendees, this program reminded them of the years when emigrants f rom Ukraine arrived to the United States after the S e- cond World War. As a person who was born in Canada, I did not experience these wonderful times, which bound Ukrainian families together. It is heartwarming to realize that such times do not have to be a thing of the past. Congratulations to the Regional Council of New Jersey!
