4 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2013 A Truly International Day at the Ukrainian Institute by Ulana Zinych April 24, 2013 , was a sunny, beautiful day, too beautiful to spend indoors, one would think. However, it was the date for an unusual event, an Antique Ukrainian Women’s Attire Fashion Show , featuring Ukrainian folk songs performed by ar t- ists of the Ukrainian Studio of D rama under the tutelage of Maestro Ivan Bernatsky. Rest assured that no one regretted missing a day in the sun. This event , called a “tea” by the United Nations Delegations Women’s Club (UNDWC) , was organized by Dr. Natalia Sergeyeva, wife of Mr. Yurij Sergeyev, the Ambassador and Perm a- nent Representative of Ukraine to the United N a- tions, in cooperation with the United Nations Delegations Women’s Club, headed by Madame Amal’ Daou. Much of the planning and organiz a- tion was done by Mrs. Marta Kokolskyj, adviser to Ukraine’s Permanent Mission to the UN. Among the invited attendees were spouses of Permanent Representatives of United Nations Member States, women ambassadors to the UN, and members of the UNDWC. The guests inclu d- ed Mrs. Ban Ki - moon, wife of t he Secretary Ge n- eral of the United Nations , and Mrs. N. Jeremic, wife of the President of the United Nations Ge n- eral Assembly. Present were also some ladies of Ukrainian descent, among them over twenty members of the UNWLA, some members of char i- table NGOs, and a handful of invited gentlemen. As usual, the rooms of the historic Institute were pristine and impressive, which added to the fe s- tive mood. Before the official opening of the event, there was much friendly chatter, greetings, intr o- ductions, laughter , fla shing of cameras — just as one would expect when close to 200 women gat h- er in one place. Two young ladies ( both members of the UNWLA), Alla Kutsevych in a costume from Bukovyna and Ludmyla Hrabovsky in a Podilla costume, quietly took their place at the front of the room and began entertaining guests with their musical prowess — Ludmyla singing and Alla singing and playing the bandura. Their re p- ertoire was all - encompassing, from Ukrainian folk songs to opera arias. Although much of the chatter continued, it became more subdued as attendees grew mesmerized by the Ukrainian melodies. The event was officially opened by Yana Boiko, 3 rd Secretary at the Ukrainian Mission, L - R: Mrs. Ban Ki - Moon, wife of th e Secretary General of the UN, Dr. N. Sergeyeva, and Ulana Zinych, Vice Presi dent of the UNWLA. who i ntroduced Dr. Natalia Sergeyeva . Greetings were also delivered by Madame Amal’ Daou from Mali and by Ulana Zinych, First Vice President of the UNWLA, who introduced herself as Vice Pre s- ide nt to Marianna Zajac , who was unable to a t- tend but sent her greetings. The time limit for greetings was limited to three minutes per pr e- senter since the program promised to be a full and lengthy one. As a result, Mrs. Zinych chose to introduce the UNWLA in a brief, but efficient manner. She informed the attendees that the UNWLA, the oldest and largest Ukrainian wo m- en’s organization in the United States, one of whose goals is maintaining Ukrainian cultural identity, has partnered with Dr. Sergeyeva for seve ral years in bringing this annual treasured event. This year we also lent our support. She briefly spoke of the organization’s strong Welfare and Scholarship programs, hig h- lightin g the two most recent endeavors — the co l- laborative effort with Doctors Collaborating to Help Children in treating pediatric burn victims from Ukraine, and the recently established Women’s Studies Lectureship at th e Ukrainian Catholic University in L ' viv, Ukraine. Mrs. Zinych explained that the UNWLA is very strongly co m- mitted to this latter endeavor because we believe that it is an investment in the future of Ukrainian women. At the end she invited those present to visit the newest exhibit, “ Out of Tradition —
