UNWLA.ORG 17 SHORT HISTORY OF THE PHILADELPHIA REGIONAL COUNCIL – 75 YEARS from 1938 to 2013 by Petrusia Sawchak Delegates from the Philadelphia Regional Council at the XXIX UNWLA Convention held in 2011. This year the Philadelphia Regional Cou n- cil will be celebrating its 75 th Jubilee Annive r- sary. It will be a time to reflect on the past, co m- memorate the vision of its founders, mark the a c- complishments of its members, and plan for the future of its organization. From its inception in 1925, the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) was created as one national organization until recommendations were made by the delegates at the UNWLA Third Nationa l Convention held in Philadelphia on May 29 - 30, 1937, to reorganize and form nine regional councils as the organiz a- tion g rew in number s . Each regional council would have its own branches reporting to it . In June of 1938 , as a result of the resolution, a r e- gional council was established for the Philadelp h- ia metropolitan area which included Branches 2, 41, 42, 46, 47, 48 and 52. Of these branches, only Branch 52 remains to this day, but many more have been formed throughout the years. The women during these d ifficult form a- tive years were patriotic and committed to cultu r- al, educational, and humanitarian issues. They planted the seeds for an organization that would grow and flourish for years to come. Throughout its history there have been twenty - one president s, with some serving more than one term. (See the next page for a complete list of names.) At the present time there are eleven branches in the Philadelphia Regional Council.
