Projections were done by Mikhail Shraga and Volodymyr Kliuzko, who were nominated for the New York Innovative Theatre Award for their work on Yara’s Raven . Instruments played by the Koliadnyky include fiddle, playe d in the Carpathian style, and trembita — Carpathian mountain horn made of hollowed pine tree that has been struck by ligh t- n ing and wrapped in birch bark. Trembitas are used pri marily in the mountain pastures; i n the villages they are only used during the Koliada and at funerals. The musicians also play duda , a bag pipe made from a goat , tsymbaly , a hammer du l- cimer, and a vari ety of hand made Carpathian flutes. Ivan Zelenchuk is the bereza , lead singer. He comes from an old Kryvorivnia family and is the son of Ivan Zelenchuk, whose handwritten notebook of winter songs has helped to preserve this tradition despite persecution under the Soviet rule. Now in his sixties, Ivan considers his i n- volvement in the Koliada his personal mission. He met the members of Yara when they first visited the village in 2002 and took part in Yara’s Kolia da workshop in Kyiv and shows in New York, P hil a- delphia, and Saratoga Springs. Mykola Zelenchuk, the son of Ivan, proudly carries on the tradition of his forefathers, both as a winter song singer and the best trembita player in the village. He also makes the traditional costumes for the winter song singers. He has taken part in Yara pro ductions and was featured in its Still the River Flows and Winter Sun at La MaMa in 2008 and 2010. Mykola Ilyuk is a master fiddler and plays on most traditional instruments of the Carpath i- ans, including the trembit a . He is director of the renowned Hutsul instrumental ensemble and has his own museum of musical instruments from the area. He was the master fiddler for Yara’s Winter Sun and Koliada events in 2010. Vasyl Tymchuk plays the tsymbaly and teaches children to play Hutsul instruments. He has worked with Yara since 2010. Ostap Kostyuk plays the duda and various flutes , and represents the newest gener a- tion that has become expert in this ancient trad i- tion. He was featured in Yara’s Winter Sun and performed in the 2010 Koliada events . Yara Arts Group began its collaboration with traditional artists from the Carpathians in 2003, and has developed it into performances in Kyiv, Philadelphia and New York, as well as the a- tre pieces Koliada: Twelve Dishes , Still the River Flows and Winter Sun at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York . Photographs and video of the Koliada ritual in the village of Kryvorivnia have been exhibited at the RA Gallery in K yi v, La Galleria, Ukrainian Institute in New York, Spring Street Gal lery in Saratoga Springs , and a major art installation at the Ukrainian Museum in New York. Відбіг на безпечну відстань і бачу, що Шуріка вже нагодували снігом і пхають гру - дами сніг йому за пазуху, за шиворот. Далі чую за жіночим сміхом, щ о Шурік, якому в д алося виплюнути рештки снігу, заверещав таким про низливим голосом, ніби порося недорі за - не: одна із молодиць розщіпала йому пасок на штанях, щоб і туди всипати снігової каші. Цей вереск на я кусь мить спантеличив молодичок і Шурікови вдалося вирватися з їх кола. Під голосний регіт Шурік, тримаючи в руках спа - да ючі штани, давав рекорд з бігу на с е ре д ню дистанцію під захист райкомівського «моск - вича»... Добре тобі, Дмитре, сміятися, а мені Шурік пригрозив, що вижене з комсомолу «за саботаж і дезертирство». То з роботою що буде? – Не переживай. Він не такий вже дурний, щоб себе виставити на глум. Мовчати буде. А он і потяг наш. Чуєш, як всі вагони колядують. І ми собі нарешті душу відведемо з колядниками. Дмитер Слутий .
