Photo by Alexander Khantaev. In December of 2012, Yara Arts Group present ed its new works with the Koliadnyky of Kryvorivnia. The Koliada is a winter ritual that now coincides with Christmas, but is much older in origin and symbolism. The oldest winter songs are preserved in villages high in the Carpathian Mo untains, where the Koliada is considered to be the most important event of the year. Some pe o- ple believe that spring and the harvest will not come to the village unless the songs are sung in every household. The songs are incantations that assum e the magic al power of words: “What is said will be so.” On December 8 and 9 , Yara present ed Koliada and Music from the Carpathians at t he Ukrainian Museum i n New York. The Koliadnyky sa ng traditional winter songs from the villages of Kryvorivnia and Verkhovyna. Th e event also fe a- ture d the brilliant troista instrumental music from the Carpathians. Violinist Valerie Zhmud, bandurist Julian Kytasty and v ocalist Eva Salina Primack join ed the Koliadnyky . On December 15, Yara present ed Koliada and Music from the Carpat hians at the Ukrainian League of Philadelphia . The Koliadnyky of Kryvo - rivnia were joined by Accolada the Ukrainian Chamber Choir of Philadelphia. Tickets include d a $5.00 donation to the UNWLA orphans fund.
