UNWLA.ORG 31 Notable Ukrainian Women: Calendar 2013 The idea of creating a calendar dedicated to notable Ukrainian wom en was born among members of the Princess Olha Branch 50 o f the UNWLA in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They selected freely from different times and countries con - ce ntrating on Ukrainian women who contrib uted to arts and sciences , politics and civil services. The purpos e was to educate themselves and other Soyuzianky on the role these women played in the past and some are still playing in the present. Thus, we le arn about Marina Mazepa, the mother of Hetman Ivan Maz epa, who was no table in her own right. We read about a Ukrainian freedom fighter, and a writer w ho dared to confront the Soviet authorities, and we revel in the colorful illustrations of women artists of different sty les. The calendar also includes information about Eas te r eggs — their traditional decorations and the symbology contained therein. Since the UNWLA is a nonprofit org aniza - tion, all profits from the sale of the calen dar will go to scholarship programs in Ukraine, the United States , and other countries around t he w orld.
