UNWLA.ORG 19 A Priceless Gift On a warm summer evening in 1938, a young Ukrainian girl in Nizne Husne, the L 'viv oblast , sat on the weathered porch bench of her house, dreaming of a better life. Soon , war would sweep this young woman from her family and homeland into forced labor in Ge rmany, liberation, and a new life. Half a world away and a lifetime later, her daughter , Maria Sutton, sits on the stoop of a house in America, looking at the stars of the night sky. Maria Sutton , a member of UNWLA Branch 38 in Denver , Colorado, is donating 50 percent of the sales proce eds from her book to the UNWLA Scholarship F und, so that other young Ukrainian women can achieve their dreams. Maria Sutton’s memoir is a riveting story of one woman’s quiet courage and love. As the author takes us on her odyssey b e- tween the past and t he present in Ukraine, Poland, Russia, and Germany to find her biological father who disappeared shortly after her birth in war - torn Germany, she learns the family secrets of disillusionment, heartbreak, tragedies, triumphs, and human failings and successe s. The powerful story has pictures of Ukraine and previously unpublished photos of the tumultuous time in human hist o- ry known as W orld W ar II. On a deeper level, the story is about never giving up until you find what you are seeking. At the end of Maria’s 43 - year journey to solve the decades - long mystery, she uncovers a sh attering and painful truth. Yet the secret, however heartbreaking, would also become the greatest gift she would receive. About the Author Maria Sutton was born in the barracks of Germany’s former Wehrmacht command center, which had b een converted to house E u- rope’s Displaced Persons after W orld W ar II. In 1951, Maria, along with her mother, s tepfather, and sister , i m- migrated to America and she has lived in the greater Denver m etro area since that time. Maria graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Accounting and has also attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She has been e m- ployed by the U. S. gove rnment in sev eral capacities throughout her f ede r- al career, receiving many awards for her writing and investigative skills. Maria and her family reside in Golden, Colorado. A Living Legacy The Night Sky: A Journey from Dachau to Denver is destined to become a classic and signed copies are already selling for $178.
