On Saturday, October 13 th , a very inter - est ing and informative book , Gender, Politics and Society in Ukra ine , was presented to attendees . This collection of articles was edited by Dr. Ole n- ka Hankivsky, the great - granddaughter of the first President of the WFUWO , Olena Kysilew skyj, who was a renow ned journalist, activist in the women's movement, and Senator t o the Polish parliament. Dr. Hankivsky is Professor of Political Science at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. T hree members of the UNWLA A dvisory committee to the Women’s Studies Lectureship at UCU contributed articles to this e xtensive work of research : Iry na Koshu - lap, Dr. Marian Rubchak and Oksana Kis ' . Co n- gratul ations ! I would like to use this occasion to give you a status report on the UNWLA Women ’ s St u- dies Lectureship at UCU , wh ich our generous supporters have made possible. The Fall 2012 semester course “ Gender Studies in Historical S ciences ” is in progress, taught by Professor Oksana Kis ' once a week. The course consists of 15 sessions (30 hours) and counts for three credits. Among its participants, there are five graduate students in history and two fourth - year students of the Humanities F a- cu l ty. Two of the students are young men! A c- cor d ing to Professor Kis ', s tudents are actively participating in the course and show ing a keen interest in debating . One studen t is writing a ma s- ter's thesis , “ Soviet pronatalist p olicies, 1936 - 1955 , ” under the supervision of P rofessor Kis '. (The thesis researches the image of mothers in the Soviet press and propaganda during that time p e- riod ). Dr. Andrea Peto , a historian and pro fessor at t he Department of Gender Studies at Central European U niversity (Budapest, Hungary), will contribute to the Lectureship by giving a lecture , “ Theoretical and methodological issues in writing women's history in Central Europe , ” during her visit on November 15 - 16 , 2012. Partially funded by NEWW Book & Jou r- nal Project , about 100 books and magazines were purchased and/or collected and sent to the R e- search Library at UCU to be included in the sp e- cial book collection of the UNWLA lect ure ship. An exhibition entitled “ And the truth in the word ... , ” organized on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Milena Rudnycky ’ s birth and prepared at the National Museum “ Memorial to the Holodomor Victims in Ukraine , ” will be exh i- bited at UCU for two weeks during the first half of November. At the opening of this ex hibi tion, L e- sia Onyshko, Deputy Director of the Na tional M u- seum , is scheduled to s peak on the role of Milena Rudnyc ky in informing the world com munity about the Famine. * * * This November begins the year of the worldwide commemoration of the 80th anniver - sary of the Holodomor of 1932 - 33. Please read the request of our Vice President of Public Relations for membership participation in commemora - tions held in our local communities. W e ask that you do not forget that the book the UNWLA tran s lated into English , A Candle in Remem bran - ce , is an extraordinary source of information about the Ukrainian genocide , which can be shared with our American neighbors and friends! Final preparations for the annual Na tional Board meeting , to be held on November 2 - 4 , 2012, in New York City , are underway . UNWLA projects have developed extensively over the past year , and the Board needs to assess our progress and look forward. We invite our readership to visit our we b- site and peruse the historical pages of our mag a- zine. Please read the article written by our English editor , Olesi a Wallo , on this newly com pleted and exciting project. The essence of Thanksgiving is to be thankful for all the graces which God has bestowed upon us and not to forget these graces in the coming year . May God bless you and your families and friends!
