16 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2012 The convening of a WFUWO Congress is truly a valuable event that allows Ukrainian wo m- en from countries all over the world to con nect, get acquainted, unite, exchange views and exp e- riences, and together affirm the for midable spirit of Ukrainian women. The decisions made during the Congress will further guide the path s of the member organizations united under the umbrella of the WFUWO — the organizations whose mi s- sions are bound together ideo logically. As a r e- minder — in 1948, the UNWLA was a co - founder of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations (WFUWO ); and initial ly, inform a- tion about the work of the WFUWO was featured on a special page in the issues of the UNWLA magazine. On October 11 - 14, 2012, the Tenth WF U- WO Congress was held in Toronto, Canada. Eight UNWLA delegates actively participated. The del e- gation consisted of UNWLA Honorary Pre sidents (Anna Krawczuk and Iryna Kurowyc kyj), the cu r- rent UNWLA President, three Vice Pre sidents (Ulana Zinych, Sofia Hewryk, and Lida Bilous) and two committee chairpersons (Mary Poliansky and Zoriana Haftkowycz.) Alla Cher chen ko, Pre s- ident of Branch 126 of Boston , attended as a guest. During the four - day Congress, five interes t- ing and professional round tables were h eld . The UNWLA delegates participated in two of them: “ Let Us Work, Build and Protect ” (the slogan of the Congress) was moderated by Lida Bilous, and Marianna Zajac was one of the presenters, spea k- ing about carrying the slogan into protecting Ukrainian wom en’s organizations; and during “ The Role of Ukrainian Women at the United N a- tions, ” Iryna Kurowyckyj spoke about her exp e- riences as the International Council of Women representative to the UN, and Maria Poliansky was the secretary of this round table. Duri ng the latter event, Mrs. Nadia Shmigel, WFUWO repr e- sentative to NGOs (nongovern mental organiz a- tions ) at the UN , and Dr. Chrys tyna Durbak, Pre s- ident of the Wor ld Information Transfer (WIT) — a non - profit and non - govern mental organization which deals mainl y with the environmental pr o- tection and dissemination of environmental ed u- cation — also shared their UN knowledge and e x- periences. The UNWLA thanks all participants, but especially our own delegates, for their work in prepar ation for this forum and its exchange of specific innovative ideas. Orysia Sushko, a promin ent and honored figure in women ’ s affairs and in general com - munity matters that affect Ukrainians, was elected President of the WFUWO for a five - year term. Two UNWLA members were voted onto th e new WFUWO Board: Lida Bi lous, the UNWLA third Vice Pres ident, and Renata Zajac, f irst Vice President of the Auditing Committee. We wish the new Board much success in the mobilization of women to band together for the Ukrainian cause s , especially for the women ’ s movement. I would like to extend special thank s to the Honorary WFUWO President Maria Szkambara for her friend ly and active cooperation with our orga niza - tion. The extremely informative four - day Cong - ress also gave us a chance to me e t delegates and guests from the United Kingdom, France, Aust - ralia, Argentina, Poland, Esto nia, Italy, Canada and the United States. Our discussions gave us much food for thought and a path for future coo p- eration. A fter the World Congress of Women ’ s O r- ganizations met in New York in 1959, a literary work competition was announced. Maria Beck established and funded the WFUWO Literary Fund and gave the WFUWO Board the oppor - tunity to lead such a competition for the very first time in the history of the Ukrainian women ’ s movement. Fifty years have passed since then , and it has naturally become more difficult to find supporters of such a competition . In memory and honor of Marusia Beck, who demonstrated her deep patriotism through her generosity and by establishing this Lit erary Fund, the UNWLA r e- solved to continue this initiative and financially support this fund. A donation in the amount of $2,500 was presented to the newly elected Pre - sident during the Congress banquet held on the 13th of October. We sincerely wish furthe r success to all those who are dedicated to Ukrainian wo m- en’s contemporary literature. I am very proud to announce that d uring th e Congress , I was named WFUWO Honorary Member for “many years of sacrificial work for the women's movement and the strengthenin g of
