6 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2012 THE SPLENDOR OF OUR EASTER For as long as I can remember, I looked forward to Easter morning. Now, don’t get me wrong! I am not one of those who leap out of bed at the crack of dawn each morning. NO!!! But Ea s- ter??? Easter is different. In fact, you can keep all the gifts so generously presented to loved ones all over the world at Christmas in exchange for the extraordinary feeling of renaissance that explodes in my heart and soul on Easter morning. Maybe you underst and or maybe not. What astounds me is that the elation has never diminished. Year after year, the heartache, the sorrow, and the despair that haunt every single one of us from time to time disappear on the morning of our Lord’s Resurre c- tion. As I walk out of church after the enchanting Easter Service I feel impervious to any hardships that may cross my path and feel empowered by the ecstasy and beauty of spring. Uk rainian Easter egg decorating (the art of pysanka ) is a highlight among the rituals we perform and another aspect that I love about Ea s- ter. It is the perfect Ukrain ian bridge from paga n- ism to Christianity. The aura and mystery it represents dates back to the Trypillian culture. As so many legends proclaim, it is the embodiment of spring and promise of new life both spiritually and physically. With the advent of Christianity , it became the promise of the Resurrection and ete r- nal life and happiness. The p ysanka symbolizes friendship, love, protection from harm, wealth, good fortune, beauty , and health. What better ambassador of Ukrainian culture can be found ? Knowing how I feel ab out Easter, my good friend and t he National Board Executive Commi t- tee’s Treasurer, Nadia Cwiach, asked me to assist her in running t wo pysanka workshops thi s s pring. The first workshop took place at St. Paul’s on the Green Church ( Norwalk, CT ) on Saturday , March 3 , and the other one on April 5, 2012 , at St. Students showing off their pysanky with Olia Rudyk (center), St. Mark's Episcopal Church . Mark’s Episcopal Church ( New Canaan, CT ), where Nadia works as Financial Secretary. Each class was attended by enthusiastic women and men who appreciated the beauty and a rtistry so well displayed on a pysanka . Nadia and I shared our personal knowledge about t he technique of creating pysanky and explained the symbolism of colors, signs, and designs found in various regions of Ukraine. Each participant of the workshop was then given a kit that included a stylus and bee s- wax and set out to work on his or her own c re a- tions. It was quite amazing to watch the individ u- al creativity exh ibited by workshop participants. While the assignment was one of two sample eggs, discussions, ideas , and the flow of the wax led to a truly unique p ysanka for each of them. We were proud to see how this pearl of Ukrainian culture was embraced by a non - Ukrainian group of men and women. As in pr e- vious years, this was a rewarding experience and time well spent . In order to participate in the work shops , students paid a registration fee , and all proceeds have been donated to help pediatric burn victims at the Burn Care Unit of Hospital #8 in Lviv . Anyone interested in supporting this project can contact the UNWLA main office at (212) 533 - 4646 or email offi ce@unwla.org .
