UNWLA.ORG 17 UNWLA Ohio Hosts a Book Presentation As part of Women ’s History M onth , the Cleveland community was treated to a present a- tion of Scratches on a Prison Wall, a gripping World War II memoir by Luba Komar, translated into English by Christine Prokop. The event was organized by the Ohio Ukrainian Nat ional Wo m- en’s League of America and took pla ce on March 24, 2012. After a few words of welcome by the Ohio Council P resident Daria Fedoriw and the intr o- ductory remarks by Bra nch 12 P resident Halya Pohlid, the guest speaker Lida Prokop took the podium. She explained the process of the book’ s creati on and summarized the historical bac k- ground of the events in the memoir. Scratches on a Prison Wall fi rst appeared in Ukrainian as “Protses 59 - ty ,” or Trial of 59 . Christine Prokop, the author’s daughter, tran s- lated the book into English, adding her moth er’s diaries and recollections to craft a fascinating and highly readable memoir. The speaker emphasized the importance of the English translation, done so that the younger generation as well as the public at large would be able to learn some details of th at horrendous time in Ukrainian history. Ms. Prokop then read a few excerpts from her mother’s book. The presentation was enhanced by some video clips of the author herself (who passed away in 2007) as well as some remarks by the translator and editor Chri stine Prokop. As a 21 - year - old student in Lviv, Luba Komar joins the underground Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and in 1940 is a r- rested duri ng the night and whisked away to pri s- on by the NKVD (secret police). After brutal inte r- rogations by depraved and sadistic NKVD officers who attempt to break he r will by beatings, threats, and humiliations, Luba refuses to bend. She is sentenced to death together with o ther young st u- dents. Eventually several of them, including Luba, have t heir sentence re duced to 10 years of hard labor and 5 years of exile. On the way to the Sib e- ria, with the war raging and the Germans pushi ng towards Moscow, the group of prisoners is d e- tained in a transit prison in Berdychiv. During those terrifying moments, Luba and several ot h- ers have the good fortune to escape. Luba cla n- destinely returns to Lviv and c ontinues her u n- derground work — now under German occupation. This book tells an extraordinary multi - faceted story. It is a powerful emotional page - turner, which reads like a thriller and keeps the r eader guessing. It describes interactions in the underground resistance movement as well as life in Sovi et prisons and on death row in vivi d detail. It gives one an honest, not exaggerated, yet fasc i- nating insight into the psychology and behavior of young people under unbearable stress. There are passages that read like belles lettres , such as the author's descriptions o f the beauty of the Carp a- thians while she travels as a courier between the OUN and the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) . The book vividly portrays the invincible spirit of the “Greatest Generation” of 20 th - century Ukraine. It conveys the depth of human courage and dedication to the noble cause of freeing one’s country from brutal foreign occupation. The translation is sur prisingly effective, preserving the intensity and freshness of the ori g- inal.
