“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 201 2 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 13 As evidenced by the calendar of events b e- low, the past month has been very busy, filled with meetings, including Regional Council annual meetings, UNWLA sponsored events, and co m- munity happenings. The event held at the Ukrainian Museum on April 27th was both historic and symbolic: it demonstrated the results of unity and certainly made one think. In his address to the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Re ligious Organiz ations of Ukraine in Kyiv in 200 1, Pope John Paul II said , “ Continue without ceasing in your common search for an increased sharing of the values of religion lived in freedom and of tolerance lived in justice . This is the most significant co ntribution that you can make to the overall progress of Ukrainian society.” In this very spirit, the Council had just returned as a united group from the C a- nadian Parliament in Ottawa, Canada, where on April 24th an official Parliamentarian proclam a- tion wa s issued in honor of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky’s regard for basic moral principles and the sanctity of life. Guided by these principles, Metropolitan Sheptytsky sheltered Jews persona l- ly and arranged for Greek Catholic monasteries to protect hundreds of Jewish children, many of whom survived the war and the Holocaust to tell their stories of appreciation for the extraordinary actions of the metropolitan. Included in the e s- teemed group that represented the Council were the Primate of the Ukrainian Ortho dox Church of Kyiv Partriarchate, His H o- liness Filaret; Major Arc h- bishop of Kyiv - Galicia, His Beatitude Sviato slav; B i- shop of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, Rev. Markiyan Trofimyak; Chief Rabbi of Kyiv and Ukraine, ______________________ Members of Soroptomist International from Dniprop e- trovsk, Ukraine, visiting New York City. Rabbi Yaakov Dov Bleich, as well as protestant, evangelical , and muslim leaders. According to His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the recognition in the Can a- dian Parliament to a hall filled with government representatives, who recognized the presence of this united clerical group from Ukraine with a r e- sounding round of applause, was a true miracle! Indeed it was! And when this esteemed group a s- sembled in Washington, D.C., on April 26th, U.S. government officials present were in awe . While most news coming out of Ukraine is filled with despair and negativity, this trip shined a ray of light. In unity there is hope. Only in unity will there be a future. Attending Regional Counc il annual mee t- ings offers an excellent opportunity to speak pe r- sonally with both the Boards and the membership of the Regional Councils, to inform them on the ongoing work of the Executive Committee — on a personal, one - to - one basis — as well as to answer any pending questions. This year afforded me the chance to share the latest news on the UNWLA Pediatric Burn Unit Project. A grant from the I n- ternational Rotary Club, matching a $10,000 Bo s- ton Rotary donation (of which $6,000 was a UNWLA contribution), was app roved and wired to Ukraine. The grant totaled $36,000 and a l- lowed Dr. Savchyn to purchase pre - approved i n- struments for the Burn Care Unit. In other words, the UNWLA’s $ 6,000 qualified the unit for a total grant of $36,000. I was also able to report that p rogress is being made in preparation for the digitizing of decades of Our Life issues. Natalia Sonevytska of Branch 64 of New York City volunteered to sift through boxes of magazines found in the admini s- trative UNWLA offices and to separate them into chron ological sets for scanning. Our administr a- tor, Olya Stasiuk, will be completing and mana g- ing the project going forward.
