“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ - СЕРПЕНЬ 201 2 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 15 A s this issue of Our Life arrives at your doorstep, we trust that you are enjoying the many summer events in our Ukrainian communities across the country. How fortunate we are that the Ukrainian community has managed, while admi t- tedly diminishing in numbers , to survive and offer us a large variety of children’s summer camps, festivals and concerts to enrich our lives. The natural process of assimilation aside, I think we would all agree that the Ukrainian language, although we may not all be completely fluent in it, is a significant binding force in the diaspora. Without any doubt, Ukrainian should be the one official language of Ukraine and ther e- fore be its steadfast binding force. The draft law on the “Principles of State Language Policy,” i n- troduced a nd approved by Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada on June 5, 2012, is very disturbing since it contravenes the Constitution of Ukraine, which states that the state language of Ukraine is the Ukrainian language. The draft law constitutes a serious threat to the future status of the Ukra i nian language and its role as the sole official state language of Ukraine. The UNWLA joins the voices of Ukrainians worldwide that stand in d e- fense of the Ukrainian language. The UNWLA joins the Ukrainian World Congress and the World Feder a tion of Ukrainian Women’s Organ i- zations in cal l ing upon the Ukrainian government authorities to prevent the domination of the Ru s- sian language in an independent Ukrainian state. Our membership is anticipating and wor k ing steadfastly toward s the official opening on September 1st of the UNWLA’s Women’s/ Gender Studies at the Ukrainian Catholic Unive r- sity in Lviv. This is a very exciting time for our organization. The UNWLA was built on the shoulders of Soyuz Ukrainok Ukrainy whose very founda tion rested on the education of women. This endowment will allow us to continue and reinforce this foundation. We would like to si n- cerely thank our regional councils, branches, and all individuals who have generously contributed to our fundraising campaign thus far. The r e- sponse has been very encouraging. However, I would like to bring special attention to Branch at Large #56 of North Port, Florida, both for the branch’s own contribution and for the extraord i- nary campaign spearheaded by the branch foun d- er, UNWLA Honorary Member Maria Nawaryn - ska. The North Port community campaign proved the formula: vision + belief + commitment = success. We sincerely thank you! This issue of Our Life features some ar c- hival materials from Milena Rudnytska who b e- lieved that “... developing intellectual values stopped being a diversion for [the Ukrainian woman], becoming rather an internal necessity.” (Dilo – 1924) We know that our goal to empower the young female students at the UCU through a broader education will not be achiev ed overnight. It will require a long - term commitment which is precisely what our endowment offers―a long - term commitment to realize the change we hope to achieve. As women progress, everyone in soci e- ty benefits, including men, children, and families. We kn ow that opening this door to self - realization for young women will lead to more choices, o p- portunities, and useful information in how to live their lives. This long - term commitment will yield long - term fruits. We, as women of Ukrainian de s- cent, should supp ort this project and strive t o- gether as members of the UNWLA to make it an outstanding success. Criticisms or doubts are u n- founded since tapping into the limitless potential of young women is not only the smart thing to do but also the right thing. On the national level, our organization, with its branches from California to Massach u- setts, continues its work, and we unite on the pla t- form of education. There is no doubt in the minds of the UNWLA Executive Committee that we are blazing an important trail in U kraine because education cannot be stolen nor sold in the ma r- ketplace. As Milena Rudnytska stated, “ a wo m- en’s organization will unite us all without regard to class or political bent because women’s inte r- ests are the same for all of us!” (Nasha meta – 1919) Yes, women’s interests are the same for ALL of us! In an article published in Our Life in November of 2011, Dr. Martha Bohachevsky - Chomiak stated: “ By creating an Endowment for a Gender Studies Program at UCU, we could demonstrate an intelligent initiative for all of Ukraine. UCU has proven, through the years of its existence, an ability to build on its resources, not merely to use those resources.” I eagerly invite you to join us in this historic campai gn!
