18 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2011 events, by catching a Ukrainian surname in print or in conversations. These women have an extremely varied background, but all were interested in cultivating friendships with other Ukrainian American women. It is in this manner, that they were drawn to each other and to the UNWLA and became dedicated Soyuzianky. Their strength is interaction with the American community around them. Branch 99 was formed in 1968 in New York state’s capital (Albany) and, at one time, had 46 members — a large number for this community. This branch, because of its leadership and location, became the center of the area’s diaspora community life — the branch established and runs a nursery school (svit lychka), sponsors a singing group (Charivnij Homin), runs an annual and extremely successful Easter bazaar, among other events After taking care of Regional Council business, an interesting and thought - provoking discussion ensued among the delegates at thi s meeting. It focused on what held each branch together, in other words, what was its glue? For Branch 34, it was the daughters continuing and supporting the branch their beloved mothers had built; for Branch 95, it was friendship and an opportunity to bec ome more involved with the Ukrainian community and reconnect with their Ukrainian roots; for Branch 99, it was living in an active Ukrainian community and recognizing how much women contributed to this hub of activity. The conclusion, according to the summ ary I received from Ms. Kushnir, was that each branch is an individual entity, has different needs, different strengths, and cannot and should not be compared to any other. Many of the ladies from North Port and from central New York will be attending the XXIX UNWLA Convention in Whippany, New Jersey. They will share their respective backgrounds, fundraising project ideas, membership challenges, successes and frustrations, etc. The “younger” women will seek out the advice of more seasoned members, eagerly listening to accounts of “how it used to be.” But these younger members will share their own stories — for instance, about how technology can help communication. And everyone will benefit from this mutual sharing, and the UNWLA’s spirit and purpose will be lifted and enhanced. There will, of course, be disagreements, but it is certain that these too will be in the spirit of the greater good. Discussions will ensue about the current state of affairs in Ukraine and how we, as an organization, should approach t hem — or whether we should respond to them at all. Friendships and contacts will be made, renewed, and maintained. All of this will take place around a tight schedule, one addressing the programs and formalities of an 86 - year - old organization within the fram ework of a convention held for the 29th time. How proud we should be! Please join us for the XXIX UNWLA Convention on May 27 – 30. We promise you an experience no Ukrainian woman should miss. _______________________ Central New York Regional Council meetin g, March 26, 2011.
