“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ - СЕРПЕНЬ 2011 27 under the direction of Hryhorij Mamota; singer Anna Kosachevych ; and bandurist Oksana Telepko. Certificates of appreciation were presented to UNWLA members for 50 years or more of service as well as to UNWLA members wh o have been integral to the UNWLA’s Scholarship Program: Anna Krawczuk, Orysia Jacusz, Luba Bilowstschuk, and Daria Lissy. Individual special awards was also presented to UNWLA members w h o had distinguished themselves in leadership positions and in other ways. Afternoon Plenary Session The afternoon plenary session was called to order by Convention Chair Lidia Bilous. Following a brief report of the Credentials Committee, which again verified a quorum, those appointed to review and approve the minutes of the p ast convention reported that the minutes were accepted with minor changes. The first order of business was Parliamentarian Oksana Xenos’s discussion on Parliamentary Procedures and on the Internal Revenue Service guidelines and parameters that the UNWLA m ust adhere to in order to maintain its tax - exempt status. A major emphasis of Judge Xenos’s report was the distinction between organizations that provide “direct support” and those who serve as “feeder organizations” that funnel contributions to other char ities, noting the UNWLA must diligently work to confirm its unique niche as a “direct support” organization with all funds clearly and consistently earmarked for stated purposes. At this juncture, Vice President Sophia Hewryk introduced a new potential UN WLA project — funding an endowment fund for lectureships of women’s studies at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. She spoke briefly about the potential of Ukrainian women and how this potential could be best fulfilled through education. She then turn ed the discussion over to Marta Kolomayets, who explained how the proposed endowment would operate. The next segment of the Plenary Session was devoted to the election of UNWLA officers for the 2011 – 2014 administration and was conducted by Nominating Comm ittee Chair Zoryana Mishtal. The list of candidates was approved by unanimous vote, thus confirming an orderly transition from one administration to the next. Members of the new administration were asked to approach the front of the hall and were given a s tanding ovation by the membership. The plenary session concluded with a discussion about the proposed endowment fund for UCU with tax considerations addressed by Parliamentarian Oksana Xenos. As cited in the Convention Resolutions (see pages 18 – 20), the U NWLA shall now study the feasibility of funding a Lectureship in Women/Gender Studies at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. Convention Banquet That evening elegantly attired ladies and gentlemen gathered for the cocktail reception that always prec edes the UNWLA’s convention banquet. With pleasant and unobtrusive background music provided by violinist Valeriy Zhmud and beverages of choice provided by two efficient and accommodating bartenders, the reception was an opportunity for everyone to decompr ess after the day’s busy schedule, to socialize with old friends, make new acquaintances, and simply enjoy themselves. Once guests found their seats in the banquet hall, they were welcomed by New Jersey Regional Council President and Convention Committee C hair Olha Lukiw who spoke briefly about the strength of the UNWLA’s unity, symbolically represented by the wreath serving as the convention emblem. Ms. Lukiw then introduced the newly elected National Board members who were greeted with enthusiastic applau se. She then turned the program over to Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening Ksenia Rakowsky. Following an invocation by the Very Reverend Archpriest Mitrat Roman Mirchuk, Ms. Rakowsky invited UNWLA President Marianna Zajac to the podium. Elected that a fternoon to serve a second term as president of the UNWLA, Ms. Zajac expressed her gratitude for having the honor to serve the UNWLA in this capacity for the next three years. She then spoke about another organization, Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, which is c ommemorating its 90th anniversary this year. Looking to the past, Ms. Zajac described the organization’s founding meeting, a meeting spearheaded by the dynamic activist Milena Rudnytska. Musing about the women who responded to Rudnytska’s call for action, she noted how harmoniously and efficiently they transformed themselves into a political force for the good of women in Ukraine. “Four years later,” she continued, “Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine was stripped of its membership in the International Council of Wom en,” a political twist of fate that prompted the founding of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of
