After lunch, we welcomed our very sp e- cial guest speaker, UNWLA President (and still Branch 95 member) Marianna Zajac. “Pani H o- lova” (as we call her) spoke about the history of the UNWLA, the o riginal reasons it was founded, its goals and mission, and reme m- bered the exceptional women who inspired the organization’s growth. She also spoke of the links UNWLA branches have from the past and to the future, how we keep our heritage alive, and how we showcase our uniqueness as a n a- tion . She emphasized how we grow and adapt to the changes in our Diaspora, welcoming those who became part of the Diaspora through marriage or as adopting parents of Ukrainian children. President Zajac also shared inform a- tion about her recent trip to Ukraine and gave details about the new UNWLA project with Doctors Collaborating to Help Children, Shri n- ers Hospital, and the pediatric burn unit of Lviv Hospital #8. The luncheon included a beautiful mu s- ical program provided by the Korinnya Ukra i- nian Folk Ensemble and a delightful perfo r- mance by the Kerhonkson Ukrainian Dancers under the direction of Andrew Oprysko, whose late mother Elaine was a beloved member of our branch. There were also displays, created by branch members Lesia Kuch and Cathy Go r- ham, highlighting the achievements of Branch 95 over the two decades of its existence. Pe r- haps the most notable among these achiev e- ments was the organizing and executing of the 2005 UNWLA National Convention in Albany, NY. This thre e - day event was co - organized with our sister branches in the Central New York Regional Council. Some of the Branch’s activ i- ties over the years have included: sending annual goodwill pac k- ages to orph a- nages and nur s ing homes in Ukraine; offering educ a- tion al wor k- shops, demo n- strations, and exhibitions as well as oppo r- tunities for Ukrainian - themed pro jects through the Dutchess Arts Council and other local groups; doing pysanky demos on local TV cable ne t- works as well as writing articles for local newspapers o n Ukrainian Easter traditions; annual bus excursions, garage sales, penny socials, tag sales, and church dinners, held to fund parcels to Ukraine; annual bus trips to various events at the Ukrainian Museum in NYC; participating in local craft fairs as well as holiday church bazaars; joint projects with Dutchess County Girl Scouts Council, including workshops for scouts and leadership conferences on Ukra i- nian culture, heritage, and crafts; organizing the "Echoes of Byzantium" Di n- ner Benefit for the American community in order to promote awareness of the Cho r- nobyl nuclear disas ter in Ukraine ; hosting multiple women's conferences and spa weekends at the Soyuzivka Heritage Center; attending community events sponsored by other ethnic groups to show support and friendship; participating in Ukrainian cultural festivals at the Soyuzivka Heritage Center. During the luncheon, Branch President Eva Panchyshyn honored the work of Branch 89, whose members made up the original Ke r- honkson Branch and who are now members at large. These women helped build the Holy Tr i- nity Church and were the first to bring the Ukrainian culture to the Mid - Hudson Valley. They supported the activities of the Soyuzivka Heritage Center, the CYM Ukrainian Camp, and the Ukrainian school. President Panchyshyn also acknowledged our honored guests from the
