18 WWW.UNWLA@UNWLA.ORG “ НAШЕ ЖИТТЯ ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2011 Left to right: Ola Movch an Novak, Helen Palmer, Annette Stadnyk, Luba LePage, Mary Mykolenko. D ISPLAY OF U KRAINIAN F OLK A RT IN W ARREN , M ICHIGAN The Warren Community Center (5460 Arden, Warren, Michigan) housed a large di s- play of Ukrainian folk art for three months, from mid - July to mid - October, 2011. The di s- play featured various specimens of traditional folk art, such as embroidery, pysanky , ceramics (Hutsul, Trypilian, and Kievan), woodcarving, and national costumes. Also included was i n- formation on the Ukrainian tragedy of Holod - omor. The display was the work of UNWLA Branch 53, Detroit Regional Coun cil. Branch members who put it together include Helen Palmer (pre s- ident), Ola Movchan Novak (vice - president), Luba LePage (correspon d- ing secr e tary), Mary Mykolenko (o r- ganizational chai r person), and A n- nette Stadnyk (cultural chai r person). All of the article s on display came from the personal collections of these members, and some items were handmade by them. For e x ample, all of the Hutsul ceramics were made by Luba LePage, one of the embroidered pillows was made by Mary Mykole n- ko, and the p y sanky were made b y Ola Novak. The members of Branch 53 were pleased that the display was prominently featured in Warren Weekly on September 28, 2011 (pp. 1, 3, and 13) with several photographs and an extensive story based on interviews with A n- nette Stadnyk and Ola Novak. Ola Movchan Novak TRYPILLIAN LUNCHEON Two decades i s a significant milestone for any organization or group , but especially so when it marks the years of a branch’s success and continued growth . The branch I am refe r- ring to is my own Mid - Hudson Branch 95 whose members have recently celebrated the Branch’s 2 0th anniversary. The jubilee celebr a- tion was held on Sunday, September 11th, at the Soyuzivka Heritage Center in Kerhonkson, NY, and featured a unique Trypillia - themed lu n- cheon. What made this celebration especially poignant was the fact that Branch 95 wa s founded by the current UNWLA President M a- rianna Zajac, along with her good friends Lesia Orlan, the Branch’s expert in Ukrainian history and culture, Olha Hnateyko, past presiden t of the Ukrainian Museum, and Oksana Lenec, the Branch’s “Godmother.” From the beginning, the goal of Branch 95 was to unite the Ukra i- nian women of Dutchess and Ulster counties to further the ideals and goals of the UNWLA through good works in their communities. K a- therine Zarycky Soroka, a Ukrainian patriot and fighter for an ind ependent Ukraine, was chosen as the patroness of the Branch . More than half of the Branch’s members are those who were part of the founding group. The other half are new members, like myself, and now we have members even in nearby states. The Mistress of C eremonies and ho s- tess — the current Branch 95 President Eva Pa n- chyshyn — opened the luncheon’s program, and the President of the Central New York Regional Council, Maria Cade, gave welcoming remarks. Prayers were said before a wonderful meal, and a moment of s ilence was observed in solemn remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy.
