16 WWW.UNWLA@UNWLA.ORG “ НAШЕ ЖИТТЯ ”, ГРУД ЕНЬ 2011 Jill Hennessy and Marianna Za j a c . The Annual National Board Meeting of the UNWLA took place on October 14 - 16th at the headquarters building in New York City , an d much to the satisfact ion of all present, the Board was once again fully represented — each Regional Council and every Standing Commi t- tee was in attendance. To complete this gathe r- ing, both Honorary UNWLA Presidents, Anna Krawczuk and Iryna Kurowyckyj, joined the gathering and of fered their greetings. One of the main focuses this year was the final overview of our newest proposed project — The Women’s/Gender Studies E n- dowment to be created at the Ukrainian Cath o- lic University in Lviv, Ukraine. Education is an asset that can never b e taken away or stolen from a population. It is an intangible gift and, considering the present situation in Ukraine, it is also an invaluable investment. On Friday evening, October 14th, an expert panel shared its professional knowledge and experience as to the importance of such an endowment (please see the article by I ryna Koshulap, p. 2 1 ) . The panel’s conclusion was unani m- ous — it is a tim e ly program and an absolutely necessary one — and the Board’s determination and co m- mi t ment was solidified. Regional Co uncil Pres i- dents and Acting Liaison for Branches at Large reported on their branches’ cooperation with their assigned nursing homes in Ukraine. As a reminder, this project — Assistance and Caring for the Elderly — was initiated on the occasion of the UNWLA’s 8 5th anniversary. The Chairpersons of UNWLA Standing Committees each offered their p r o- posed plans for the next year and their commi t- tee s ' goals. A presentation was also given on a recent survey taken of younger professional women and the best m ethods to reach and i n- terest them in our organization. Almost all of the suggested communication methods i n- volved the latest social networking avenues. During the afternoon of the 15th, a lively discussion took place during the roundtable on the topic “H ow can we assure that all of our branches and members feel part of ONE n a- tional organization?” Many suggestions and concerns were touched upon and will be taken under advisement. On Sunday, October 16th, the Executive Committee members gave their reports and plans for the next year. Without exception, each member of the Executive Committee does ou t- standing work and is dedicated to the UNWLA’s mission. This annual meeting co n- firmed that although we are challenged with increasing our membership (as are all o ther Uk rainian American organizations) our organ i- zation is vibrant and continues to be a vital co n- tributor to our diaspora communities. On November 4th, the Ukrainian Inst i- tute of America hosted the New York City pr e- miere of the film Genocide Revealed . T his mu l- ti - award winning documentary was directed and produced by Yurij Luhovy and debuted in 2009 in the Ukrainian language as “Okradena Zemlya.” The female voice - overs in the En g lish version were done by the eas i ly recogniz a ble and well - known a c tress Jill He n nessy. The UNWLA, as a Ukra i nian American women’s o r ganiz a tion, was invited to present a certificate of appreci a tion to Ms. Hennessy for her co m mitment and for fin d- ing the time in her busy schedule to take on this emotional assig n- ment. Ms. Hennessy’s m a ternal grandmother was Ukra i nian and holds a very special place in the heart and memories of the a c tress. The pr e miere was very well a t- tended and I was able to remind the audience and Ms. Hennessy exactly what the UNWLA’s role has been regarding the Famin e - Genocide. I spoke about the cont i- nuous thread from those dark years of 1932 - 33 when our o r gan i- z a tion tried to alert both the United States and the international communi ty about the horrors that were taking place in Ukraine as well as obtain humanitarian help — right to the present time in which we have published Ca n- dle in Remembrance and continue to partic i- pate actively in the U.S. Committee for Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
