Has writing and performing this piece changed your p erspective on your mot h- er and her life? It's funn y, not so much on my Mom's life, but on my own. I started calling this piece a chick play, by analogy with a chick flick, because so many women can relate to it. It's not that men didn't appreciate it, but I found that more women were very vocal, at least to me, about understanding what it must be like — that m o- ment when you think you are going to get ev e- rything you want, and then it doesn't work out... I know it's not very modern to want that wedding day and a family, but I know that I personally do want that one day... And I think this story hits home for a lot of women, of all ages. And it hit home for me. We all have jou r- neys, and maybe they'll never extend over quite as many miles, literally, as those of m y gran d- parents and my parents, but they are still m o- ments of personal definition, trials by fire. The things that don't kill us make us stronger — those types of moments. And that can be being on a boat for a week, or it can be sitting in a car for two and a half hours having no idea what's going to happen next. Performing the story that's full of such moments has put many things in my own life in a new light. How big of a role does your Ukrainian heritage play in your life? It defines my life in a lot of wa ys. You will def i- nitely know, within the first hour of meeting me, that I am Ukrainian. I talk about it a lot, and I am proud of my heritage. I certainly don't speak Ukrainian as well as I should, but my heritage is a huge part of who I am. I have ne v- er be en to Ukraine, but that will change in the near future. I met an amazing woman, Nadia Tarnawsky, who just moved to Seattle from Cleveland and came to see my show. She is the lead singer of the wonderful band Alchymeia; they are touring in Ukraine next spri ng, and she invited me to come — n ot to perform, but to come along for a visit. So I am very excited, and I hope that afterwards my Ukrainian heritage will become an even bigger part of my life. Thank you so much, Yana! Дякую !
