30 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2010 Людина трич і дивною буває... « Людина тричі дивною буває, коли родиться, жениться і вмирає .» (Народна мудрість). Наскільки ми знайомі з нашими тради - ціями? Як глибоко вони закорінені в нашій свідомості і як часто ми дотримуємося їх? Не помилимося, коли скажемо, що с учасна людина повертається до них обличчям лише у виключ - них випадках. Та й то не кожна. Для більшості з нас вони стали таким собі пережитком мину - лого, маревом древніх часів. За останні «циві - лізовані» віки ми практично розгубили внутріш - ній глибоко симво лічний зміст наших традицій і обрядів. Якщо й дотримуємося чогось, то це лише зовнішньої обрядовості, часто навіть і не розуміючи, що все це, власне, означає. Напевно кожен з нас хоч раз у житті з захопленням розглядав український рушник, на якому вишите світове дерево, або дерево життя. Не одна вишивальниця пробує вишити своє дерево життя, і не одна мати хотіла би залишити такий же рушник у спадок своїм дітям. Бо, властиво, у такому рушнику закодовано голов - ний закон нашого буття: народитися, закласти сім ’ю – дати початок новому витку життя через дітей, і вмерти. Кожен елемент на такому руш - нику має своє символічне значення, нічого там немає чисто декоративного чи беззмістовного. На весільному рушнику традиційно зобража - ються два голуби з весільними вінцям и в дзьо - биках, повернуті один до одного головами. Цим символом вишивальниця говорить, що творення сім’ї прирівнюється до творення світу. Як зі світового хаосу постає Світ, так і з утворенням сім’ї постає новий початок, що, власне, й уособлює порядок. 128 - ий відділ СУА, Округа Філядельфія, спробував реалізувати доволі амбітний проєкт – поставити на сцені традиційне українське обря - дове весілля, максимально відтворюючи його так, як це робили наші предки. Ми намагалися ввійти у спосіб мислення і життя наших предків, зрозуміти їх бачення світового ладу, розшиф - рувати давно забуті нами символи і змисли. Як це нам вдалося – судити нашим глядачам. (Folk wisdom) How familiar are we with our traditions? How deeply are they rooted in our consciousness, and how frequently do we adhere to them? The average person turns to them only in very few select situations , and even this does not pertain to every - one. For most of us, these traditions have become simply vestiges of the past, mirages of ancient times. In reality, in these, our “civilized” times, we have practically forgotten the deep symbolic meaning of our t raditions and customs. Even if we adhere to them, we frequently we do so while un - aware of their meaning Most likely, each of us has, at one time, or another, admired an embroidered Ukrainian ritual cloth or rushnyk on which the tree of life was depicted. Many an embroiderer attempts to em - broider her tree of life, many a mother wishes to leave such a cloth for her children as an heirloom. In essence, this rushnyk contains the code of life: to be born, to establish a family, thus giving rise to a new cycle of life, and to die. Each stitch embroidered on this rushnyk has a symbolic meaning, there is nothing merely decorative or meaningless here. Two doves facing one another with matrimonial wreaths in their beaks are depicted on the wedding cloth. Here the e mbroiderer teaches that the creation of a family is like creation of the world. Just as the world is created from earthly chaos, so a new beginning arises from the formation of a family, personifying order. UNWLA Branch 128 of the Philadelphia Regional Co uncil, attempted to undertake a rather ambitious project — to present on stage a traditional Ukrainian wedding which very closely resembled the weddings of our ancestors. We tried very hard to probe their thoughts, to understand their vision of life, to deci pher our long forgotten symbols and sense of existence. Whether we succeeded is for those who see our work to judge.
