20 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ - СЕРПЕНЬ 2010 They also visited Ridna Shkola where Director Andriy Pereklita presented interesting background information on the history of the school. During a tour of the Lesia Ukrainka Saturday School of Religion and Ukrainian Studies, Director Viktoria Vo lianiuk provided a similar informative overview of the school. The tour was facilitated by Olha Liskiwsky (Br. 81), Parish Council Cultural and Educational Committee Chairperson who, together with George Korol, Parish Council President, escorted the delega tes through the St. Mary Pro - tectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. In addition, the delegation visited and participated in a small program at the UNWLA Branch 76 svitlychka, which has been an integral part of preschool education in the Detroit area for o ver 45 years under the leadership of teacher and administrator, Myrosia Baranyk (Br. 76). Ms. Baranyk is currently assisted by teachers Anya Tkachuk and Tanya Bedrus (Br. 76). The delegates also visited Immaculate Conception and St. Josaphat Ukrainian Cath olic Churches. They had a memor - able and inspiring meeting with Rev. Mario Dacechen, OSBM, pastor of St. Josaphat’s Church. An informative PowerPoint presentation was presented at the Ukrainian Selfreliance Michigan Federal Credit Union by President of th e Board of Directors, Bohdan Lisowsky, and Manager, Borys Bluj. Ukrainian Future Credit Union Manager Andrew Jakymowych, and As - sistant Manager Irene Maritczak (Br. 96) prepared a cordial visit and reception for the delegates. They also visited t he Ukraini an American Archives and Museum and were pleased to see the beautiful displays so well organized by Director Chrystyna Nykorak. The delegates participated in a sing - a - long with elderly residents at the Ukrainian Village, organized by the facility’s assista nt manager, Helen Derkacz Turner (Br. 115). Olga Solovey (Br. 58) accompanied and directed the Zoloti Dzvony and provided an entertaining medley of Ukrainian songs which the delegates and all those present thoroughly enjoyed. An added and unexpected benefi t of hosting the group from Ukraine was their introduction to the concept of American volunteerism. They especially enjoyed participating in the political fundraiser for State Representative Lesia Liss, an activity which showed them a unique avenue for gar nering funds to support various undertakings. They also purchased various items at a “rummage sale” at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church Hall, which was held to benefit the needy. The delegates indicated that such a sale was something they could possi bly organize on a practical level back home. They seemed inspired to explore ways of contributing to the betterment of life in Ukraine. The week ended with a successful farewell reception on Friday, April 23, 2010, at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Warr en, Michigan, to which the Detroit Regional Council invited the local Ukrainian community. During the reception, Nina Ome lya - nenko, Head of the Preschool and Elementary Education Division, Ukrainian Department of Education and Science in Kyiv, provided a thorough overview of Ukraine’s educational system. All of the delegates had an opportunity to present some background information about themselves and shared memorable impressions from their visit. They were very appreciative and excited about their week - l ong activities and were most happy to be part of a vibrant Ukrainian community in the Diaspora. The Detroit Regional Council is extremely pleased with the success of this project, consistent with its mission to support educational and chari t - able endeavo rs. It was a privilege to participate in the future development of educational programs in Ukraine.
