26 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2010 Theresa Caryk Honored by National Institutes of Health Theresa Caryk, a member of the UNWLA Branch 78 , was recently awarded a medal of recognition by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for her contribution to deciphering the genetic code by which information in genetic material (DNA or RNA sequences ) is translated into pro - teins. This achievement was identified as a National Historic Chemical Landmark by the American Chemical Society and honors were bestowed on Dr. Marshall Nirenburg (who was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1968 for this discovery) and his co - workers, including Mrs. Caryk, who was an integral member of the research team working on the project . T heresa joined Dr. Nirenburg’s laboratory in 1962 and was his technician for 12 years. Prior to that, she worked at the Gerontology section of the He art Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. After moving to Silver Spring, Maryland , in 1962 she continued working full time and raising three children. Each of her children attended Ukrainian School , every Saturday for 12 years. She is a faithful member of the Ukrainian National Shrine of the Holy Family in Washington, D.C. , where she has been president of the Mari i ska Druz hyna for the last 11 years. After 32 years of Civil Service, Mrs. Caryk joined the laboratory of Dr. Craig Venter at the Institute for G enomic Research in Rockville, Maryland. Dr. Venter was in the process of sequencing the entire human genome. Just recently he received the National Medal of Science from President Obama. Theresa Caryk was co - founder of UNWLA Branch 78 , which was founded i n 1964 and is based i n Washington, D.C.
