22 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2010 then president of World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organization. Little did we know that we would soon be involved in discussions about dramatic and tragic events in U kraine. It was while we were in London during this General Assembly that the world first learned about the explosion of the reactor at the Chornobyl nuclear plant. We were stunned and nearly paralyzed from shock when we learned what had occurred. Lily Boy kens, a delegate from Belgium, helped us write a resolution condemning the use of nuclear energy without proper precautions to protect human beings from harm, a resolution that we were later to present for consideration by the ICW. She told Martha and me t hat she had to help because she saw that we were too emotionally distraught to do the work ourselves. Lily’s h er help was welcome and very valuable. As an Executive Committee member of ICW, she was able to bring the resolution to the Board; it was then pr esented to the Plenum, where everyone but the French delegation voted to accept it. A delegate from one of the island nations in the Pacific observed that the French were against the resolution because France was in the process of testing its own nuclear w eapons in the Pacific. Nonetheless, the resolution passed unanimously — the first international resolution to be proposed and accepted on this particular matter. The second ICW GA that I attended was in Washington, D . C . , in 1988, and here again UNWLA member s played an important role. The UNWLA’s Washington Branch was registering the delegates. Due to the efforts of Martha Bohachevsky - Chomiak, the UNWLA also hosted a reception and fashion show at the National Press Club. In her book The Splendid Vision , autho r Jessamine Harmsworth later wrote: I walked a few paces from the hotel to the National Press Club for a reception and Fashion Show sponsored by the Ukrainian National Women’ League. I was early but made instant contact with Martha Chomiak who was due to chair the event. I sat firstly at the table with Ukrainians who had little English except for one who helped translate. Then everyone began to arrive in great numbers and the buffet was assembled. When I first arrived, there were just empty tables, but fin ally after a lot of bustle, a magnificent amount of food was served. I tucked in as these buffets bec o me my dinner when I am on my own. Then came the Fashion Show, displaying the various garments worn during 1,000 years of Christianity in Ukraine, pre - suma bly instituted by some princess. They gave me a lapel pin display with her picture. We had the usual speeches giving thanks etc. from Mrs. Sullivan NCW/USA president and others. After all the people drifted away , I stayed on and we had a great group of exc ited and enthusiastic Ukrainians and were photo - graphed. They are lovely people and very warm in their friendship and it was inspiring and uplifting to be among them. There is a very strong community of the exiled Ukrainians in America . The following Gener al Assembly of the ICW was held in Paris, France, in 1993. It was the first time in the organization’s 108 year history that the U.S. delegation was led by a Ukrainian - American woman: I ryna Kurowyckyj , President of the National Council of Women/US A . In 19 97, the GA was convened in Ottawa, Canada, and it was there that Ukrainian - American women met women from Ukraine’s Zhinocha Hromada for the very first time. The following GA was held in Helsinki, Finland, in 2000. And it was in Helsinki that the National C ouncil of Women of Ukraine resumed its historical place as a member of International Council of Women. In 2003, in Perth, Australia, the Ukrainian delegation was in full force and was warmly wel - comed by a very helpful Christina Syvenka Baily, then presid ent of Soyuz Ukrainok of Australia. As most readers know, the next ICW General Assembly was hosted by NCW/Ukraine in Kyiv. Maybe I’m prejudiced, but I think this was the best General Assembly I ever attended.
