Twenty - one years ago, UNWLA New Jersey Regional Council welcomed a new branch. The o rganizational efforts of Maria Polanskyj were crowned when she, her mother Honorary UNWLA member Natalia Chaplenko, and sister Anna Krawczuk, served as godmothers during the “christening” celebration of Branch 98 . The newly formed branch, based in Mon mouth County, New Jersey, which was established during the year commemorating the millennium of Christianity in Ukraine (988 – 1988), selected St. Olga as its patroness. During its 21 - year history, the branch has elected seven presidents. Four of them, Dr. M argaret Putykewych , Mrs. Mischenko, Mrs. Mary Bonanno , and Mrs. Orysia Jacus, are still members, and Mrs. Jacus currently serves as branch treasurer. Today, t he uniqueness of Branch 98 is membership that encompasses different age groups, backgrounds, and c ountries of origin. Its members were born in the United States, Brazil, Poland, Austria, Germany, and Ukraine. Many members are bilingual. Membership has extended into Ocean and Union Counties, New Jersey. Since 1988, Branch 98 members have worked to suppo rt the goals of the UNWLA and have strived to inform others about the true history and struggle of Ukraine and its people. These goals continue to guide branch endeavors. Branch 98 (Holmdel/Middletown, New Jersey) of the Ukrainian National Women’s Leagu e of America officially celebrated its 21st anniversary on Sunday, June 7, 2009, at the Sisterhood Hall of St. Andrew’s Memorial Church in South Bound Brook, New Jersey, dedicating the event to branch patroness St. Olga. Held on a sunny afternoon, the even t, attended by members from several New Jersey branches and guests, included a luncheon and a full program of activities. Branch President Victoria Mischenko opened the festivities by extending a warm welcome to all. Luba Bilowchtchuk served as the mistre ss of ceremonies and led those attending in singing the UNWLA anthem. UNWLA Honorary President Anna Krawczuk read the UNWLA prayer. Branch godmothers, Maria Polanskyj and Anna Krawczuk, presented the branch with a Ukrainian embroidered ritual cloth (rushny k). G reetings and letters of con - gratulations, including a warm letter from Mariana Zajac, National President of the UNWLA, were shared. A delicious lunch, topped with a variety of tasty desserts, was served. Ania Dzera and Yaro - slava Kochman provided mus ical entertainment, enchanting the audience with their lovely renditions of Ukrainian songs.
