“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2009 15 OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian N a tional Women’s League of America Vol. LXVI SEPTEMBER 2009 SHARING THOUGHTS, VIEWS, & NEWS I trust that all of our readers had an enjoyable and restful summer and are re - energized to meet the challenges of the rest of 2009. We invite you, once again, to visit our website and become acquainted with upcoming UNWLA fall events and remind branches to send information about planned events to our webmaster, who is keeping the website current and updating it as quickly as she gets the information . It is a wonderful way to share news and information with other web visitors and a convenient way to find events for your own fall calendars. ( unwla@unwla.org ) I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate UNWLA Parliamentarian and member at large, Oksana Xenos, on her appointment as a federal Administrative Law Judge in Detroit, Michigan . Before this move, Ms. Xenos was an attorney and tax law specialist on Tax - Exempt Organizations with the IRS Rulings and Agreements Office in Washington, D. C. Congratulations, Oksano! On June 29, Ukraine’s First Lady, Kateryna Yushchenko, was presented a medal and papal award during a brief ceremony at the Ukrainian Institute of America. Mrs. Yushchenko said it was an honor for her to return to the Ukrainian Institute and have the opportunity to see so many friends, leaders of numerous Ukrainian community organizations and institutions, who were invited by Consul General of Ukraine, Mykola Kyrychenko. (As of July 27, Serhii Pohoreltsev has returned to New York City as the new Consul General. We bid farewell to Consul Kyrychenko who was always most gracious, supportive, and helpful to UNWLA.) On the same day, Constitution Day was celebrated at the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations at an event hosted by Ambassador Yuriy A. Sergeyev . One of many interesting guests at this event was Ayla Bakkalli, President of the American Association of Crimean Turks, who shared many insights about the political and social situa tion in Crimea, Ukraine. We will be inviting Ms Bakkalli to share her views with our readers in a future interview. A few weeks later, I had the pleasure of making a new acquaintance — the lovely Ruslana, who was performing at the Heritage and Cultural Fest ival at Soyuzivka. Our first encounter was i n July 2008 when we spoke by phone during her visit to Washington, D.C. At that time, we reviewed our respective efforts to aid the victims of the 2008 flood in western Ukraine. During our meeting at Soyuzivka, w e exchanged phone numbers and I hope to see her during my visit to Lviv (Aug 2009). The very popular pop star and the winner of the 2004 Eurovision song competition, has served as Good Will Ambassador of Ukraine for UNICEF , combats trafficking in human beings , and supports many other charities . Our National Board meeting is scheduled for O ctober 23 - 25, with an agenda that will focus on reviewing our many positive accomplishments and evaluating plans for the future. Where do we see our organization in the years to come? Which path will we follow to reach our goals? The challenges are many, b ut the rewards are greater! Marianna Zajac, President
