20 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2009 university students. In 2009 this conference was entitled “The national idea: yesterday, today and tomorrow.” The students offered presentations a nd referred to historical figures, projecting that the convictions of these heroes should be emulated and would certainly help lead the nation to a permanent, stable independent Ukraine and would, as well , help solve many of the country’s existing problems . At the end of the conf e rence, the students stated confidently that each one of them would continue their work at a high spiritual and national level. In 2008, the Ivano - Frankivsk regional council held a conference entitled “The Ukrainian women’s movement : the historical and social - cultural perspective.” In her opening statement, the p resident of this r e gional council , Ulana Shvediuk, clearly stated that Soyuz Ukrainok has one main goal — that is, the develo p ment of their country, Ukraine — and that its member s volunteer their time and efforts towards this goal . Since 1991, Soyuz Ukrainok has established clear guidelines under which their organization should function. Du r ing this conference, Rostyslava Fedak, National Vice President of Soyuz Ukrainok, stated th at the membe r ship should plan the organization’s everyday work in a manner that gain s recognition within the community, recognition that will inspire and influence local leaders and thus influence their leadership goals. Since 2007 , the Kolomi i a branch of the Ivano - Frankivsk regional council has conducted a special program: “A Ukrainian book — in every school, in every town, in every region.” Each year, Soyuz Ukrainok chooses a writer or poet whose anniversary falls within that year and then distributes this writer’s books throughout its regional schools. The Kolomiia branch is now in the process of another important project: g a thering information and documentation about famous women of Kolomi i shchyna — patriots, artists, teachers, doctors — for its growing collec tion of historical archives. In these few examples, we see different spheres of work of Soyuz Ukrainok: cultural, historical, p a triotic, practical. We commend the women of SU on their dedication and recall with pleasure and admiration the leaders and memb ers of these two regional councils . We hope to continue our communicat ions with them a s well as exchange ideas and information. _______________________________________________________________________________ On September 30 my beloved Mother, Anna Kusievi ch Kalba, passed away. The outpouring of cond o lences has been tremendous, and I would like to thank you all for your kind words. Mama’s passing will create a terrible gap in my family’s life, in my life. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is a very special one, one that forms who you are. In 1929, Mama and her family came from Stoianiw, Raion Radekhiv, Ukraine, to Montreal, Canada. Mama was five years old. So began her family’s life in the time of the Great Depression. My grandfather, Gregory, assumed his obligations as the head of his family in this new country by working as a gr o cery store owner. Mama told us that Dido’s business did not last very long because her father gave unlimited credit to the needy of his neighborhood. This was one of many lessons Mama’s parents taught her and one she emphat i cally passed on to her children — that family life, caring for others, was a most important value, an exemplary value to hold. Mama was an intelligent, strong - willed, loyal, loving person who passed h er love of community, love of UNWLA, and love of our culture on to her children. Vichnaya Pamiat! _________________________________________________________________________________ Please accept the wishes of the UNWLA Executive Board for a lovely Thanksg i v ing Day with your families.
