26 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2009 a result, Honorary Presiden t Iryna Kurowyckyj; Lilia Hryhorowych, Preside nt of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine; and I were able to hand - deliver much needed financial aid to the residents of two villages severely affected by the flood. At the time, I underscored the fact that we were repre senting every UNWLA member who took it upon herself to raise funds for this worthy cause and every person who donated funds for this purpose. During this time, we also began evaluating sound ground rules for the most effective way to provide help in Ukrai ne. After much discussion, we have determined that, at this time, the people who most need our help are the elderly in nursing homes in Ukraine. Our Social Welfare Committee Chair, Iryna Rudyk, who has recently returned from her first trip to Ukraine as th e newly elected chair, was instrumental in prompting this decision. While in Ukraine, Ms. Rudyk visited one of these nursing homes, spoke at length with its director and has had additional conversations with the directors of other such nursing homes. She s hared what she learned with the Executive Committee, and a circular describing our selection and coordination processes will be sent out in the very near future. The translation into English of Professor Valentyna Borysenko’s book “Candle of Remembrance,” which includes numerous eyewitness accounts of survivors of the Ukrainian Holodomor of 1932 – 1933, has been completed. Sofia Hewryk, VP of Cultural Affairs, is leading this very meaningful UNWLA endeavor. At present, we are looking at potential publishers, exploring book jacket design, and working on other technical details. The First Lady of Ukraine, Kateryna Yushchenko, wrote the forward to this book and Honorary UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj and I co - wrote a preface. The UNWLA received a generous, anon ymous donation for this project. Our Vice President of Public Relations, Christine Melnyk, is presently focusing on ensuring that Rosetta Stone, a language tutorial product that offers learning software for over 30 languages, adds a Ukrainian - language comp onent to its lessons. The Executive Committee feels strongly that giving access to such lessons to non - Ukrainians is extremely important, belated, and necessary as there are many foreigners who do business in Ukraine and many non - Ukrainians who are interes ted in Ukraine for various personal and professional reasons. Other projects happening simultaneously with the aforementioned include the work of First Vice President Ulana Zinych who, besides being ever ready to help me with attention and enthusiasm, chai rs the Eva Stashkiv Fund and chairs the committee that evaluates potential candidates for this award. Ms. Zinych also oversees the Combined Federal Campaign contributions received by the UNWLA, ensuring that thank you notes are sent to donors. Correspondin g Secretary Daria Drozdowska, Recording Secretary Maria Andriyovich, Treasurer Nadia Cwiach, and Financial Secretary Roma Shuhan are all fulfilling and exceeding the responsibilities they accepted at the Convention. Member at Large Vera Kushnir has agreed to act as Liaison from the Executive Board to the Convention Committee for the XXIX UNWLA Convention. We’re happy to share with our readers that Olha Lukiw, President of the NJ Regional Council, and her Board have agreed to accept the honor, the responsibi lity, the rewards of hosting the next Convention. We thank them for their commitment to our organization. We cannot omit the chairpersons of the Schol arship Program, Maria Polanskyj; the Archives, Olha Trytyak; and Ecology & Women’s Health, Dr. Orysia Tres znewsky. Each of these ladies is focusing on her own responsibilities while supporting broader UNWLA programs. In addition to the face to face meetings, conference calls have become an important and convenient tool for the Executive Committee. We are able to hold more frequent staff meetings to manage and assess progress as well as to discuss future activities. Working together harmoniously, we feel that much has been accomplished in one short year. In retrospect, the three most significant points highlig hted in my Convention speech — Our Life, membership, and the Website — have made significant progress. However, there is much to be done! As we move forward, I would like to reiterate that we are aiming to continue the outstanding work of our predecessors, whi le tailoring them to today’s needs. I would like to close this month’s report by extending warm and sincere wishes to our fathers and wish each one of them a wonderful Father’s Day celebration, good health, and happiness. And to all the UNWLA husbands who support and help their wives while they volunteer through UNWLA to help the Ukrainian community, we say “Thank you!” — Marianna Zajac , President Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
