“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2009 25 OUR LI FE Monthly, published by Ukrainian N a tional Women’s League of America Vol. LXVI JUNE 2009 SHARING THOUGHTS, VIEWS, & NEWS It has been a year since the XXVIII UNWLA Convention in Troy, Michigan. The UNWLA Executive Committee and National Board have achieved much since that time with the a im of advancing the goals of our organization. I would like to share with you all that we have accomplished. The newly elected National Board held its first official meeting in October 2008. Our first assignment was to look at the “big picture” and to out line future tactical and strategic plans. A high priority on our agenda was our magazine. As all of you know, an ongoing deficit has long made publication of Our Life too costly to sustain and we began with reorganizing the editorial structure. In making this change, we also took into consideration the comments and requests of UNWLA members and other subscribers with respect to content published in these pages. Our current editorial board and editor Tamara Stadnychenko are working with renewed energy and d edication to ensure that Our Life lives up to its name and truly reflects “our life.” Our former press secretary, Lidia Slysh, has been a great asset in this endeavor and is currently responsible for the magazine’s Ukrainian content. Our Education Committe e Chair, Christine Shwed, has redesigned the children’s section. Our contributing authors have helped us make many interesting changes. Because of these changes, we have managed to reduce our costs markedly. The input from our readers has been very positiv e and well directed. The cover of Our Life has become a platform for our Ukrainian American female artists. Our invitation to these women to submit their artwork for this new initiative has been met with enthusiasm. Iryna Steckiv, Member at Large of the Ex ecutive Board, has enthusiastically agreed to lead this project and is assembling a portfolio of artwork for future issues. Of course, one of the most pressing concerns of our organization is the issue of membership. At the first National Board meeting, Anna Macielinski, Vice President for Membership, agreed to spearhead a “Retention and Recruitment” campaign. Her article on this subject, which explained the basis and goals of this project, appeared in the March 2009 issue of Our Life. Informational packe ts suggesting ways to hold membership drives and interest potential new members have been made available and can be ordered directly from Ms. Macielinski. The committee working on this matter was established at October’s National Board meeting; since that time, subcommittees in Detroit and North Port, Florida, have been formed, allowing for a well - coordinated and professional approach to the project. The campaign is already reaping results and has brought responses from several branches. Our Liaison for Mem bers at Large, Lana Yarymovych, has been focusing on growing this very important segment of our membership as well as on expanding communication with the current members at large. In addition, through individual and personal contacts, there is an interest in forming new branches in at least four cities. These initial signs and the enthusiasm of those involved suggests that the campaign will flourish. Another exciting accomplishment is the redesigned and rejuvenated UNWLA Website. The first phase of this pro ject was rolled out in March. Our Arts and Museum Committee Chair, Zoriana Haftkowycz, coordinates this committee, which continues to meet on a weekly basis via Web - conference. Currently, the Website content is being translated into Ukrainian. We invite yo u to submit your branch events, interesting articles about your members, new ideas, etc., to the Webmaster so that they can be shared with other UNWLA members and Website visitors. For much of its history, the UNWLA has helped others in times of need, res ponding quickly and efficiently to crises and emergencies. The most recent example is our organization’s response to the devastating floods in western Ukraine last summer. Your support and fundraising efforts were invaluable. As
