“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ - СЕРПЕНЬ 2 009 25 Ruslana Pronko , Nykola Ste wart , and Olya Yalovenko performin g a scene from Natalka Poltavka in America . Last, but not least, came the highly anti - cipated contemporary and humorous musical re - creation of Ivan Kotliarevsky’s famous play Natalka Poltavka , an interpretation written and produced by Mrs. Roma Dyhdalo and directed by Ruslana Pronko. Entitled Natalka Poltavka in America , the play centers on a modern dilemma facing a modern Natalka — bilingual summaries of the story were pro vided by Mrs. Dyhdalo (in Ukrainian) and Mrs. Hewko (in English). The play begins with Natalka (played by Olya Yalovenko) living in the U nited States on a student visa with her mother Horpyna Terpelykha (played by Ruslana Pronko ) . Natalka’s fiancé Petro li ves in Ukraine. Horpyna and Natalka purchase an automobile from used - car salesman/ potential suitor/businessman Joe Vosnyj (played by Nykola Stewart ). Joe is an older Amer ican Ukrain - ian gentleman who has an acceptable command of the Ukrainian language, al beit with an American accent. He is e namored with Natalka and wants to marry her. Horpyna becomes an avid matchmaker , believing that Joe will provide Natalka (and herself) with security. Enter doddering attorney Ivan Vybornyj (played by Wolodymyr Dyhdalo ) who is familiar with the immigration status issues faced by Natalka and her mo ther and none too shy about expressing his opinions on these and other matters. Natalka’s long - lost love and fiancé Petro (played by Vasyl Perec ) unexpectedly arrives from Ukrai ne , throwing a wrench into the marriage arrangement concocted by Horpyna and abetted by attorney Ivan. Drama ensues when Natalka’s mother decides she will marry Joe herself and asks for his hand in marriage. Joe ’s definitive “ S ure ! ” evoked much laughter an d enthusiastic applause from the audience . The members of the Organizing Committee for this event included Myrosia Baranyk, Hanna Bilynska, Roma Dyhdalo, Natalka Hewko, Lida Kolodchin, Switlana Korduba, Ruslana Pronko, Marta Korol - Skalchuk, and Iryna Shum ylo. The c ommittee would like to thank everyone who participated in making this an evening to remember! A special acknowledgement must be accorded to members of all our immigration “waves” in the Detroit community who purchased tickets to sup - ported this U NWLA endeavor. The event included a raffle featuring beautiful prizes contributed by Lida Kolodchin/EKO Gallery (pysanka), Olena Papiz ( two embroidered dolls), and Iryna Shumylo (gerdan). UNWLA members who attended the UNWLA Convention in Troy, Michigan, in May 2008 will recall that Natalka Poltavka in America was originally performed at a dinner program held at the Detroit’s Ukrainian Cu ltural Center .In the convention version, the dialogue was tailored and personalized to accommodate a UNWLA audience — Natalka’s long - lost love travels to America from Ukraine via a Fulbright Fellowship received with the assistance of UNWLA Honorary Member M artha Bohachevsky - Chomiak.
