24 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ - СЕРПЕНЬ 2009 exhibit of Uk rainian embroidery and seminar conducted by Branch 88 in conjunction with the Ukrainian Heritage Studies Center at Manor Junior College, whose director, Chrystyna Prokopovych, is also Branch 88’s cultural chairwoman. The exhibit entitled “Ukrainian Embroid ery - A Metamorphosis in Beauty and Function” was held at the UECC from March 20 to March 22. Seminar speakers explained the origins, symbolism, design patterns, and colors of embroideries from the past, while the artifacts displayed included traditional gem s and future heirlooms created by artists today. Visual artist Sophia Lada, formerly of Philadelphia and now residing in Toronto, Canada, presented embroidered works created by her late mother, Marusia Lada Uhorczak. The seminar speakers were Lubow Wolynet s, Tania Diakiw O’Neil, and Olga Kolodij. The children from the Ukrainian Heritage School also benefited from “hands - on” experiences with the presentations as an extension of their Saturday school program. The exhibit was partially funded by a grant from t he Pennsylvania Council of the Arts. (A full report on the event was published in May 2009 issue of Our Life .) During the meeting , members discussed the future goals of the Branch, which, in recent years, seem s to have focused more and more on the preserv ation and cultivation of Ukrainian folk arts and sharing them with the American community. The 24 - member branch is also actively seeking more women to join this culturally dedicated group. Anyone interested in joining UNWLA Branch 88 is invited to contact any member of the branch or President Roksolana Luciw at 215 - 635 - 5109. AN EVENING IN DETROIT by Elizabeth Kuczer E veryone who attended the “Evening of Entertainment” on Sunday, April 05, 2009 , at the Ukrainian Cultura l Center in Warren, MI will remember a delightful and well - coordinated variety show. Sponsored jointly by UNWLA Detroit’s Scholarship Committee, Branch 76 , and Branch 129, the program commenced with opening remarks by Mrs. Switlana Korduba, Regional Chair of the Scholarship Committee. Switlan a explained that the foremost reason for organizing this community event was to raise funds for the UNWLA Scholar - ship F und while providing guests with a unique and enjoyable evening. T he entertainment segment of the e vening began with introductory remarks by Master of Ceremonies, Natal i a Hewko, UNWLA Honorary Member and Detroit Regional Council Honorary President. Well - known for her witty and engaging style of keeping to a program agenda, Mrs. Hewko briefly outlined th e traditional points of a keynote speech — that is , it must be well - researched, must have a strong impact, and must be long. A sking the audience to be patient with the inevitable lengthy speech to come, she invited keynote speaker Ihor Kozak to the podium. M r. Kozak , contradicting the MC’s description of the typical keynote speech, surprised the crowd by reading a humoresque by author Stepan Heryliv — a “speech” serving as a vehicle to acknowledge everyone from distin - guished guests to kitchen staff and all tho se in between! This unexpected ly amusing and short address was met with enthusiastic and appreciative applause! Mrs. Hewka then read several humorous poems by Pavlo Hlazovyj. Musical entertainment followed with a performance by acclaimed young singer Olya Yalovenko who has delighted audience not only in Detroit but also in other cities in the U nited States and in her native Ukraine, where she currently resides. A ccompanied on the piano by her mother , Halya Yalovenko , the soprano sang several songs , each el iciting a resounding “bravo” from her cap - tivated audience. In keeping with the variety show theme, the next performance was a presentation from Lesia Ukrainka’s classic play Lisova Pisnia , directed by Ruslana Pronko, p resident of Branch 129 and Cultural Chair for Detroit Regional Council . Two local youngsters , Alina Ivaniv and Semen Ivanov , performed the roles of Mavka and Lukash . B eautiful costumes added to the professional ism of this pro - duction.
