“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ - СЕРПЕНЬ 2 009 23 UNWLA BRANCH 88 ELECTS NEW OFFICERS AND REVIEWS ACCOMPLISHMENTS by Petrusia Sawchak The annual meeting and elections of Phila - delphia’s Branch 88 was held on May 2, 2009. Halyna Keller, Branch 88 membe r, and Philadelphia Regional Council president, Christine Chomyn - Izak presided over the meeting. (Organized in 1938 the Philadelphia Regional Council of UNWLA is pre - sently housed in the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center [UECC], and five of its 14 branches, which covers four states, hold meetings there.) During the meeting, the branch activities for the past three years were reviewed, elections held, and new plans formulated for the future. Roksolana Luciw, one of the founding members of the branc h when it was established some 20 years ago, was elected president of Branch 88, on May 2, 2009 . She will continue the work of outgoing president, Christine Shwed, under whose dynamic leadership from 2006 through 2009, many exciting projects forged ahead. Also elected to the Executive Committee were the following: Tetjana Artymyshyn - Danyliw (Vice President) Christine Shwed (Secretary), Ol g a Jakubowsky (Treasurer) , Press Secretary, Petrusia Sawchak Press Secretary), Renya Cehelska - Ciuk (Archivist) and Ole na Karpinich (Liaison and Public Affairs and Membership). Committee Chairwomen are as follows: Marijka Cyhan (Social Welfare); Chrystyna Proko - povych (Arts and Culture); Olga Basarab Kolodij and Volodymyra Dukh (Programs); Marijka Cyhan and Nila Pawluk (Ev ents); Marijka Cyhan, Ulana Prociuk, and Nila Pawluk (Nominating Committee); Halyna Keller and Larysa Stebly (Auditing Committee); and Petrusia Sawchak (Education). Branch 88 engaged in a number of fundraising and cultural activities during the 2006 – 2009 p eriod. Its fundraising activities included participation in the Lansdale International Festival and Christmas bazaars held at the UECC and several Ukrainian churches, featuring artifacts made by branch members, as well as the sale of Dvinka Hayda’s award - w inning children’s book entitled Little Angel’s Journey (written in English and illustrated with Ukrainian motifs). The monies raised from these endeavors were forwarded to UNWLA headquarters for various UNWLA “calls to action” and charitable funds. In addi tion, over $1,000 was raised for a special campaign for the Chornobyl Fund. In 2006, the branch presented a unique exhibit of straw mosaics, tapestries, batiks on silk, gouaches, and mixed media at the UECC, featuring the works of three generations of the Sayenko family from Ukraine. The event was held to benefit children in Ukraine. Master seminars were also conducted for students of Ukrainian Heritage School in the folk arts that were displayed.
