16 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ - СЕРПЕНЬ 2009 GETTING AWAY FROM IT ALL by Ihor Magun, M.D., F.A.C.P. It starts gradually. The daylight hours in - crease, the wardrobe begins to change, and unknow - ingly, the mood and disposition shift into a relaxed mode. Summer is here — that wonderful season where things, no matter what, just seem to be much better. You think, “If only I could bottle this.” Well, le t's get those Mason jars ready. Start by understanding the changes you are experiencing. What exactly is going on? Worries are still a part of life, but the summer mindset and environment somehow make them less burdensome. The longer day and exposure to the sunlight all contribute to a more positive outlook on things. The days are now filled with outdoor activities — garden - ing, sports, walks — and these simple pleasures are mental "getaways" even if they happen close to home. Vacations away from home are e ven better because they provide a much needed physical and mental break from the daily routine. Even air travel, which today seems to be filled with anguish and obstacles, can be a positive experiences. At high altitudes, staring out at the emptiness, I so metimes feel like I’m rising above the everyday cares and troubles that are left behind on the ground. It is a very healthy mental exercise, and it always pre - disposes me favorably to the early stages of a trip. When the plane lands, I glimpse and feel the sen - sations I shall be discovering. These experiences and observations are invitations to unburden myself during an external and especially internal voyage. Few things worth having in this world come easy. Everything has its price, and the proof is in t he pursuit of happiness and peace of mind. What does it take to maintain “that summer feeling” as part of a lifelong commitment to happiness? Probably first and foremost is recognizing that good health is the foundation for a good life, that regardless of one's work routine and personal life stressors, we must all set aside time for a healthy lifestyle and time for fun. I’ve learned this lesson from patients who tell me, “If I had to do it over, I would have traveled, spent more time with my family, smelled more roses.” The take home message of getting away from it all is to make the mindset last by making a commitment to smell those roses even after summer is long gone. Take time this precious summer to get some R & R and to make a commitment to change old habits. Bottle that summer feeling in your mental and emotional Mason jars, and draw on it often to create a new lifestyle that persists till next summer. Some Reflections on Walking Walking can increase your lifespan. It enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $7,000 per month. My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he's 97 years old, and we don't know where he is. I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me. The Real Age and Weight Connection We all get heavier as we get older, because there's a lot more information in our heads.
