“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ - СЕРПЕНЬ 2 009 11 OUR LI FE Monthly, published by Ukrainian N a tional Women’s League of America Vol. LXVI JUNE 2009 The National Board of the UNWLA extends warmest greetings and congratulations to President Barack Obama and the people of the United State of America as t hey celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July and to President Viktor Yushchenko and the people of Ukraine as they celebrate t he 18th Anniversary of Ukrainian independence on August 24th SHARING THOUGHTS, VIEWS, & NEWS The annual meeting of the Ukra inian Museum in New York City was held on June 13. At this meeting, Olha Yarema - Wynar of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art was elected to the Board as a UNWLA representative; in addition, UNWLA Art/Museum Chairwoman Zoriana Haftkowycz, already a Muse um Board member, was elected Museum Treasurer. We thank all of our UNWLA Board members for their dedication to this very fine institution, which is the culmination of our predecessors’ efforts and dreams. During the summer, many of us will be delivering c hildren or grandchildren to Ukrainian camps across the country, attending Ukrainian cultural festivals, or visiting/socializing with friends. As we engage in these activities, let us be grateful to the parents and grandparents who left us the wonderful leg acy of our rich and unique Ukrainian identity. We have been given a very special gift, enriched with love and pride, and we should treasure it and ensure its continuity. This holds especially true for the UNWLA. During this 2009 - 2010 UNWLA Membership Campa ign, let us share the history and legacy of our mothers and grandmothers by inviting and encouraging our friends and acquaintances to join our organization. Summer gatherings are especially adaptable to fulfilling this goal. We encourage our UNWLA branches to participate in the festivals and other gatherings. Share our brochures and our magazine. Have a sample of the “UNWLA Membership Recruitment Kit” on hand and invite other women to enrich their lives by joining our organization. Many of our parents immig rated to the United States in the late 1940s and 1950s, sacrificing much to ensure that their children be given an education and a bright future. The careers of these “children” carried them across the country; many of us no longer live in the close - knit c ommunities of earlier times or in the close - knit family circles that our parents and grandparents knew in Ukraine, where children often lived with or near their parents even as adults. Today, the nucleus of the family is not always in a single town or city ; family members may be separated by great distances. This societal restructuring is taking place in parallel fashion in Ukraine. But the responsibility of taking care of parents and the elderly is ingrained in us. With this in mind, we have developed plan s to seek out and help elderly UNWLA members here in the United States and are also putting into action a new Social Welfare Program in Ukraine, whereby we will be providing assistance to carefully selected nursing homes in various cities. By the time you receive this issue of Our Life , each Regional Council will have received a bulletin from our Social Welfare Program Chair - woman Iryna Rudyk, pairing a particular nursing home with each Regional Council. Details of this ambitious project will also be clearl y laid out, with the ultimate goal being to have the action in motion by early October . This summer, I am planning to attend the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations’ annual meeting in Lviv, Ukraine (August 18 - 19) as well as the World Congr ess of Ukrainians’ annual meeting (August 20 - 21). Both will be a wonderful opportunity to understand the dynamics of the entire Ukrainian diaspora and to g a uge where Ukrainian Americans stand in relation to Ukrainian communities around the world. I will be reporting on these meetings in the fall issues of Our Life. Wishing all of our readers a rejuvenating and reinvigorating summer . Marianna Zajac, President
