“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2009 33 Rocky, getting a little winded in the process of emulating Sly Stallone in the prizefighter role while I hummed the Rocky theme song. Having introduced Flat Stanley to some Philadelphia history and pop culture, I stuffed him into a new envelope and shipped him off to my cousin Tania in Illinois, who took him around the Windy City and even to the opera. (The third grad ers in Rachel’s class likely grimaced at the bit about the opera, but at least we got some interesting geographical variety). From Chicago, Flat Stanley flew (in a brand new envelope) to visit my sister in Alaska, saw the sites of downtown Juneau, and went for a long hike in bear country. My sister happened to be flying to Utah right around then, so she stuffed Stanley into her suitcase, showed him around Salt Lake City, and even took him skiing before sending him back to me. As I write, Flat Stanley’s jo urneys are drawing to an end — this is his last stop before returning to Rachel. His final “on the road” message will be written by my neighbor, a third grader named Carly, this afternoon — a kid to kid message to top off all the fun we adults have been having with this project. * * * This saga merits a few brief concluding notes and ideas. Since embarking on this great adventure I have learned that it is something other elementary school teachers are doing with their classes (either with Flat Stanley or some other fictional character), but my initial response to the project holds firm and has been enhanced by Stanley’s travels and adventures . Indeed, my only regret is that there was not enough time to send him abroad and have exciting adventures in Ukraine or Spain or China. The project has prompted some musing on how variations on this theme might be adopted as a teaching instrument in our own Ukrainian Saturday schools or svitlychky — with characters named “Vid - vazhna Varka,” “Paperova Pavlynka,” or “Mandri v- nyk Marchyk.” It is a project UNWLA members and their children might enjoy and find rather easy to sustain — one of the things our organization has given us is friends in far places (distant states and even other countries) who might find the traveling Varkas or Marchyks an entertaining and interesting educational experiment. — TSC Adventures with Coffee Filters Dedicated to those readers who view coffee filters as one-trick wonders that exist only to make sure we get a nice clean cup of java in the morning. Contributed by Tania Blanco (Flat Stanley’s Chicago hostess). ♥ Coffee filters make great covers for cooking or heating food in your microwave oven. ♥ Because they are lint-resistant, coffee filters are great for cleaning mirrors and windows and even for polishing shoes. ♥ Coffee in the morning and wine with dinner If the cork breaks and piece crumble and fall into the wine, you guessed it — get the coffee filter and Cheers! ♥ Hate watching the soil leak and erode from potted plants? Line the pot with a coffee filter and the soil stays put. ♥ Having anxiety attacks each time you stack your heirloom company china? Prevent chipped china syndrome by laying a coffee filter between each plate. ♥ Can’t figure out how to weigh those chopped walnuts for your orikhoviy tort on your kitchen scale without having to subtract the weight of the dish they’re in? Coffee filters weigh next to nothing. ♥ Gyros anyone? Keep that tadziki sauce from dribbling over your silk blouse with a coffee filter wrapper (works with tacos and popsicles and ice cream cones too). ♥ Winter giving your kids cabin fever? Have a “design a hat” party and let them use colorful stickers and other do-dads to create the perfect sombrero, shapochka, or chapeaux. ♥ Out of paper towels and hav e nothing to sop up the excess bacon grease for those BLTs? Coffee filter to the rescue. ♥ Wounded in action while shaving your legs? Keep some nick-fixers in the bathroom (More elegant than toilet tissue and won’t stick to the nick like cotton balls).
