“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 200 8 11 Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak UNWLA Honorary Member A hallowed UNWLA tradition and a highlight of the triennial UNWLA Conventions is a ceremony during which the title “Honorary Member” is bestowed on women who have distinguished themselves in service to the UNWLA. One of those honored at the XXVIII UNWLA Convention for her outstanding, multifaceted, and lengthy service to the organization was Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak. In this issue of Our Life, we present her brief autobio- graphical portrait with pride and gratitude. I am a historian with a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. I have taught (for more than forty years) at Manhattanville College, Catholic University of America, George Washing- ton University, Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, Kyiv University, and Kyiv-Mohyla Academy University. In addition, I have published books and articles on Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, and women’s history. As an author, I have received the Barbara Held Prize for Best Book in Slavic Studies and the Antonovych Foundation Award for best book in Ukrainian Studies for Feminists Despite Themselves: Women in Ukrainian Com- munity Life 1884-1939 . I was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal from the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy University and the St. Olha Ukrainian Government Medal and have been the beneficiary of a number of fellow- ships, including the Woodrow Wilson, Ford Foundation, Pennsylvania University and Columbia University fellowships, and the Founder’s Fellow - ship of the American Association of University Women. My activities in national and international venues have also included serving as vice president of the National Council of Women of USA and as Director of the Office of Fulbright Exchanges in Ukraine. I’ve been a member of the UNWLA since 1975 and have served in various capacities on the UNWLA’s executive board, including as UNWLA vice president. I am also a member of Our Life’s editorial board and have contributed many articles to the magazine. Over the years, I have received support from the UNWLA for my work for the research and eventual translation of Feminists Despite Themselves and for the publication of an edition of the works of Milena Rudnytsky, a long- time president of the Ukrainian Women’s League in the inter-war period. I am currently a member of UNWLA Branch 78 of Washington, D.C. I am married to a retired journalist. We have two daughters — one a diplomat, the other in publishing — and four grandchildren. Update on Holodomor Textbook: Several months ago, Our Life featured an article on a textbook about the Ukrainian Famine Genocide (see “Ukraine’s Holodomor: An Ed ucational Milestone and a Victory for Truth,” April 2008, p. 12). Created by Pennsylvania Distinguished Educator Vera Bej (UNWLA Member at Large) with the assistance of the UNWLA’s Education Chair Christine Shwed , and Ihor Mirchuk, a social studies teacher in the Philadelphia School District, the textbook was distributed to all 500 Pennsylvania school district superintendents at the end of November 2007 and has elicited much interest. On October 17, 2008, Ms. Bej and Ms. Shwed will be presenting the project to the Pennsylvania Conference of Social Studies Teachers, a statewide conference that will be held in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and hosts several hundred attendees. Ms. Bej and Ms. Shwed have also been invited to present the book at a statewide conference for North Carolina Social Studies Teachers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in February 2009. In addition, Ms. Bej was recently informed that the book is currently being used by some North Carolina University faculty.
