“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 200 8 8 It was with these compelling words resounding in our memories that we traveled back to our homes, once again energized by the camaraderie and uplifting experiences of this most recent UNWLA Convention. The post-convention months have been very busy for me. In the very short time span of the last three months, I have been offered a wide range of experiences, challenges, and decisions, that have become part of the dedicated work for the goals of our organization. And it is these as well as my initial impressions and emotions as your newly elected president that I will be describing in the remainder of this column. The first three months of this new presidency have been most exciting and productive and have given me much exposure to the diversity and richness of our membership, the breadth of our charitable work, and the scope of the number of lives the UNWLA intersects. The day after I returned from the convention, the International Holodomor Torch arrived at Manhattan’s Battery Park, and I joined the New York Regional Council in a Walk against Genocide, which ended at City Hall Park. From there we continued to the Ukrainian Museum for the opening of the extensive and moving Holodomor exhibit. As you know, the UNWLA played an integral and most important role during the tragic time of the Famine of 1932 – 1933. As UNWLA president, I was given the opportunity to actively continue our role in b ringing this genocide to the world’s attention during this, the 75th anniversary year, and to take part in the opening of an exhibit in the Ukrainian Museum, an institution founded by the UNWLA. During the month of June, I had the pleasure of visiting two UNWLA Regional Councils: Northern New York and Chicago. We congratulate the newly elected co-presidents of Northern New York: Didi Butenko of Syracuse and Zinna Dzus DeBole of Buffalo. The UNWLA Executive Board pledges to help them in any way we can! Although many miles separate the branches of this Regional Council, their accomplishments are many and varied. On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Chicago Regional Council, an informal gathering was held on Saturday June 21. On Sunday June 22, a celebratory Anniversary Luncheon was attended by the community to pay tribute to this large, very active Regional Council. We congratulate Chicago Regional Council President Luba Kalin for her hard work and dedication to the Regional Council and the UNWLA. Each of these Regional Councils is unique and works differently, with programs and activities based on its own circumstances and environment. At each meeting I attended, Council membership posed questions and shared concerns, allowing me to learn much about them and their work. The Ukrainian World Congress (WCU) is an umbrella organization that coordinates and represents Ukrainian organizations in the diaspora and held its IX Congress in Kyiv from August 20 through August 22. Before leaving for the Congress, we learned of the devastating flooding of July in Western Ukraine. A UNWLA announcement about the flooding was immediately sent to and published in Svoboda, and our newly elected Social Welfare chair, Iryna Rudyk, quickly sent e-mail notifications to our Regional Council presidents, soliciting help. Immediate action was requested and a plan was developed. Many of you very quickly responded with generous donations; many are still in the process of gathering funds. Honorary President Iryna Kurowyckyj (chair of WCU nominating committee), Honorary President Anna Krawczuk (guest), Maria Polanskyj, Scholarship Fund Chairperson (WCU delegate) and I (WCU delegate) attended the WCU Congress. Meeting Ukrainians from around the world (over 30 countries were represented) was a truly exhilarating experience and reinforced the fact that our common heritage and language immediately connect us. Following the Congress sessions and elections, we attended a private audience with Cardinal Lubomyr Husar at the chapel on the grounds of the Patriarchal Cathedral (under First Lady of Ukraine Kateryna Yushchenko and UNWLA President Marianna Zajac Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
