Speaking on behalf of the board of directors of New York Federal Credit Union, Irena Chaban presented formal greetings and extended their con gratulations to President Marianna Zajac. She pre sented the newly elected president with a check for $10,000, a gift from the credit union to support the UNWLA’s future endeavors. At this juncture, Honorary President Iryna Kurowyckyj presided over a hallowed UNWLA tradition— formally best owing the title Honorary Member on UNWLA members who had distin guished themselves in serving the organization. The six women honored by this prestigious designation were Natalia Hewko, Olha Hnateyko, Oxana Farion, Iwanna Martynets, Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak, and Maria Chymynec, the first woman to chair the UNWLA’s Scholarship Program. (1967-1971). A musical inter lude featuring Oksana Kro- vytska, a soloist with the New York City Opera, followed. In introducing Ms. Krovytska, Master of Ceremonies Natalia Hewko noted that “she is the Butterfly Puccini wanted,” an accolade that was solidified during the diva’s masterful rendition of the Madame Butterfly’s intricate aria. Ms. Krovyt ska also performed songs by Ukrainian composers Mykola Kolesa and Mykola Lysenko, dedicating the songs to UNWLA members. She noted that it was another Ukrainian soprano— Solomia Krushelnytska —whose rendition of Puccini’s Butterfly in 1904 ensured the opera’s acceptance and appeal among opera devotees throughout the world. An exciting feature of the triennial UNWLA convention is an award ceremony hono ring Young Women Achievers.
