On a more somber note, she spoke about the importance of the UNWLA’s endeavors to inform the world about Ukraine’s Great Famine and about the moral imperative to prevent similar crimes against humanity worldwide. She concluded with a personal comment and promise to the new UNWLA president, “Marianna, you have big shoes to fill, but all UNWLA members will help you. So will we.” Larysa Darmochval, representing of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, thanked the UNWLA for welcoming her among them with warmth and collegiality. Like those who spoke before her, she then spoke about the years of the Great Famine, citing one of Ukraine’s foremost dissidents, Evhen Sverstiuk, whose chilling description of the meas ures people took to feed themselves and their children were a grim reminder of Ukraine’s tragedy. She noted that Ukraine was still struggling to recover its historical legacy, commenting on the disturbances marking commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the birth of UPA commander in chief Roman Shukhevych. After reading the congratu latory message from Verkhovna Rada deputy and president of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, Lilia Hryhorovych, she thanked Iryna Kurowyckyj for her role in bringing the ICW to Kyiv for its General Assembly.
