OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women’s League o f America Vol. LXV JUNE 2008 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO XXVIII UNWLA CONVENTION breads Woven in Vnity and Tradition (Part I) After months of planning and preparation, the XXVIII UNWLA Convention, held in Michigan at the Troy Marriott Hotel, began on Friday, May 23, 2008. Guests, arriving from far and near, were greeted by members of the convention committee; delegates registered and were presented with a handsome and functional tote bag filled with assorted information and an elegant Celine Dion cosmetic case filled with assorted goodies. Each UNWLA member also received a copy of the con vention book, which was dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Great Famine. As guests and delegates settled into their rooms, members of the National Board gathered for a pre-convention meet ing to present the final reports of their three-year terms. F rid a y , M a y 23 National Board Meeting President Iryna Kurowyckyj called the meeting to order, Vice President Oxana Farion led those as sembled in prayer, and minutes from the previous National Board meeting were read by recording secretary Lidia Slysh. After minor corrections, ad justments, and additions, the minutes were ap proved. A brief report from Vice President Maria Tomorug, who was unable to attend, was read by President Iryna Kurowyckyj and was followed by abbreviated reports presented by Treasurer Renata Zajac, Auditing Committee Chairwoman Iwanna Ratych, and Parliamentarian Oksana Xenos, each of whom noted that more extensive reports would be presented during the convention’s plenary sessions. Convention Committee Chair Anna Macielinski welcomed members of the National Board to the convention, indicating that approximately 220 guests and delegates were expected. Next to speak was Vice President Marta Danyluk, chair of the Convention Book Committee, who expressed her gratitude to those who had assisted her in the monumental task of assembling reports, photographs, and advertisements for the book; to Oxana Farion for her work in coordinating the financial aspects of the convention book; to those who had provided editorial assistance; and especially to Iryna and Jaroslaw Kurowyckyj whose home had been converted into an ad hoc base of operations as materials were acquired, assembled, and organized for publication. Brief reports were also presented by Oxana Farion and Marta Danyluk with respect to their duties as 1st Vice President and Vice President for Membership, respectively. Sophia Hewryk, Vice President for Culture, reported on the winners of this year’s Kovaliv Award and on a special undertaking she had re cently completed—donating 35 copies of Harry Potter books, translated into Ukrainian, to a library in Dnipropetrovsk. She noted that all of the donated books had ex libris stickers indicating they were gifts from the UNWLA. Vice President for Public Relations Marianna Zajac spoke about various spe cial projects she had undertaken, including her active participation as a member of the National Holodomor Commemoration Committee, her contri butions as author to Our Life, and her correspon dence to U.S. government officials, which included a letter to President George W. Bush urging him to
