Detroit’s Branch 115: Fall Fun and a Focus on the Future by Elizabeth Kuczer From left: Lesia Bolde, Gloria Pryjma, Elizabeth Kuczer, Marta Polack, Ann Buhay, Nick Buhay, Diane Zurkiwskyj, Genny Mursjkyj, Christine Dzul, Leanna Bolde, Helen Derkacz Turner, Marta Kunynskyj, Lesia Fedorak, Vera Fedorak, Christina Zachar, Olya Yalovenko, Halyna Yalovenko Although summer was still very much in the air in the Detroit area on Saturday, October 20, 2007, Branch 115 was celebrating the autumn season with a Cider & Donuts Fall Fest for elderly residents of the Ukrainian Village Apartments complex in Warren, Michigan. This Branch 115 activity was arranged by Co-president Helen Derkacz Turner and Social Welfare Chair Marta Polack, in joint sponsorship with the Ukrainian Village. As the Assistant Manager of the Village, Helen felt this would be a wonderful opportunity to showcase our community spirit to its residents. Since Branch 115 had taken a group photo for the 2008 Convention Souvenir Book just prior to the Fall Fest, all branch members were dressed in their embroidered blouses for this event. Joining the Soyuzianky were children and grandchildren of Detroit Region’s UNWLA members, including youngsters from a local Plast group who were ready and eager to serve our guests a sweet afternoon snack. Entertainment was pro vided by the operatic voice of soprano Olya Yalo venko, accompanied on the piano by her mother, Halyna. Olya has recently returned to Michigan from Ukraine, where she recorded her first music CD. The Fall Fest is a new program that Branch 115 will most likely add as an annual tradition to an already prolific and varied schedule. Under the direction of its current co-presidents—Helen Der kacz Turner and Diane Zurkiwskyj, who are not only a great team but our very own “sister act”— members have planned and participated in the following annual fundraisers: a pysanka workshop for children and numerous bake sales (including a Christmas cookie sale). Our branch also plans to publish a cookbook in the near future. Recent Branch 115 social activities have included an enjoyable do-it-yourself pottery studio and a theatre outing to see the musical Respect. A visit to the newly renovated Detroit Institute of Arts is eagerly anticipated. However, this and similar events are currently overshadowed by a more pressing activity: working with our sister branches to ensure that the UNWLA Convention, which will be hosted by Detroit Regional Council in May 2008, is a memorable experience for all Soyuzianky, guests, and friends of our organization.
