Branch 27 Pittsburgh Commemorates 75th Anniversary of Famine-Genocide MC Michael Komichak, Pittsburgh Ukrainian Famine Committee Chair Marika Zaliszczuk, and program participants at Heinz Chapel, University of Pittsburgh On November 11, 2007, approximately 300 people gathered at the Heinz Chapel at the Univer sity of Pittsburgh to commemorate the Ukrainian Famine of 1932-1933. The program, organized by the Pittsburgh Ukrainian Famine Committee, opened with a solemn procession of flagbearing young men, children, and members of the clergy. A panakhyda (memorial service) was celebrated by the Very Rev. Msgr. George Appleyard of the Ukrain ian Catholic Church and the Very Rev. Protopres byter George Hnatko of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, assisted by other clergy from both churches. Responses were sung by the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church Choir, under the direction of Stephen Zinski. Welcoming remarks were offered by Ma rika Zaliszczuk, president of UNWLA Branch 27 and chair of the Pittsburgh Ukrainian Famine Com mittee, which consisted of the following organiza tions and institutions: Soyuz Ukrainok Pittsburgh Branch 27, the Ukrainian Technological Society, the League of Ukrainian Catholics, the Ukrainian Orthodox League, the Slavic Baptist Church, the Ukrainian Radio Program, Ukrainian Selfreliance of W. PA FCU, Poltava Ukrainian Dance Company, Kyiv Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, and Ridna Shkola of Pittsburgh. Master of Ceremonies Michael Komichak, who has hosted Pittsburgh’s Ukrainian Radio program for over 57 years, introduced the keynote speaker for the event, Professor Emeritus George Kulchytsky, who spoke on the theme of “Soviet Genocide Against the Ukrainian Nation.” As Dr. Kulchytsky concluded his presentation, six survi vors of the Holodomor, who currently live in the Pittsburgh area and had attended the commemo ration, were recognized and honored. The Ukrainian Cultural Trust Choir under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy Waslo and the Slavic Baptist Church of Pittsburgh Choir under the direction of Dr. Stephen Benham sang a number of solemn hymns. Kateryna Dowbenko, a member of Branch 27 and a Famine survivor, recited “Crime and Punishment,” a poem by Dr. Wasyl Jaszczun. Rev. Vladimir Ivashchenko, pastor of the Slavic Baptist Church offered a closing prayer. Because the event commemorating the Ukrainian Famine fell on Veterans Day, those attending sang “God Bless America” to acknowledge and honor America’s veterans. Exiting the church in a formal recessional, attendees sang Bozhe Velykiy Yedyniy (Great and Only God). Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
