Happy 40th Anniversary Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program During the month of February, Ukrainian communities celebrate our heroines, women who distin guished themselves by fighting for their country in art, in poetry, and on the field of battle. Among these are women like Olena Teliha, Olha Basarab, and Olena Stepaniv, strong and committed individuals whose memory is honored by our organization, which has a tradition that keeps their names alive as they are chosen by branches as patronesses. Some of the heroines we honor are nameless, like the women massacred at the labor camp at Kingir. Some, like Nadia Svitlychna, Raisa Rudenko, and Oksana Meshko, survived the unspeakable horrors of the Gulag and became part of the movement that led to an independent Ukraine. Others, heroines of our diaspora, fought to preserve Ukrainian culture, language, and traditions on foreign soil. And some live and work among us today. In 1937 at the III UNWLA Convention, a resolution was passed that once a year each branch should collect funds for needy students in Ukraine. The resolution was put into practice throughout our organization till the forming of the Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program in 1967. Since that time, the program and the people who have served as its chairs and members have been a source of hope for countless young people. In many ways, these members and chairs of the UNWLA Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program are heroes within our organization, for they have fought for many years to make education a reality, offering hope and opportunity that might not otherwise have existed. Over the last four decades, these women have worked hard to find sponsors willing to provide financial assistance to pupils and students of Ukrainian descent whose circumstances made it difficult, or even impossible, to go to school. Persevering in this noble task, the members and chairs of the UNWLA Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program have helped countless young people to learn, to better themselves, and to grow into well-educated leaders within their respective communities. Some became educators, some chose the religious life, and some achieved success in other fields, but each of them was given a helping hand when it was most needed. On behalf of the Executive Committee, the National Board, and all the members of Ukrainian National Women’s League of America I salute the chairs of the Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program and their committee members for their endeavors, their achievements, and their legacy. They are to be com mended for a job well done. The seeds planted 40 years ago have borne beautiful fruit—generations of children whose lives have been changed for the better. The rewards for the UNWLA Scholarship Program Chair and their members, for the long and sometimes difficult years of work, are young people that attended schools under the patronage of the program and were then able to succeed in numerous professions. The reward for our organization is that we have individuals who are committed to this program and what it represents. I would like to express best wishes to Maria Polanskyj, the present chair of the UNWLA Scholarship/Children-Student Sponsorship Program, and her team. God Bless you for your valuable deeds.
